At least 9 dead, 28 wounded in weekend shootings (Chicago)

The city saw another bloody weekend as nine people — including a teenager — were killed and 28 others were wounded in separate shootings since Friday evening.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy on Saturday defended the department’s anti-violence strategy, which he believes is taking root.

“We’re not winning, we’re not losing. We’re basically treading water,” McCarthy said. He said that in the month of August, “we had some trouble because some of these retaliatory shootings are happening quicker than we can stop them.”

Before I went to America, I was very anti-gun.

But then when I went to America, I realised the government doesn't have your best interests at heart, all that gun laws do is stop honest people from owning guns, dishonest people are still going to have that, it just leaves the population worse off.

It's not the guns that kill people, its the American's mentality towards each other that causes deaths and violence.

Australia is safe not because we have gun laws, but because the population is well off, there is no lower class or upper class, we are all ujst middle class, there are no ghettos or ppl fighting to survive, however in America there is....

Everyone in this thread is unaware that handguns are illegal in the city of Chicago. Seems to be working doesn't it?

Also there have been problems in the city where mobs of urban youths walk around and cause mischief and randomly walk up to people and knock them out and chit. They can do this freely and choose to do this in the city as opposed to the suburbs because they know that the law abiding citizens won't have handguns on them (because its illegal) and won't be able to defend themselves unless there is a HUGE group of them.

You can't compare Australia to the US man.

People in the US have had gun freedom for hundreds of years now, it's a billion dollar industry there. In Australia there is no gun culture besides a very very select few people. There are probably 10 times more gun-owners in 1 suburb in the US then there is in the entire country of Australia.
