Good on you mate! Have read Hayek before, Road to Serfdom is a fantastic piece - a bit dry to read and get through though. It's dedicated to "The Socialists of all parties", something us classical liberals always keep in mind.
Are you interested in liberalism and freedom? Or just a random read?
Fiscal policy is essentially the balance of government interference in the market through purchases and transfers. I am for almost nil interference of this kind. Large fiscal policy programs, like the ~35% of Aust GDP expenditure being government expenditure, harm us all dramatically."... and at some point you have to know that the very thing you've been taught to be afraid of, you've now grown into" - Kai Greene

Wicked! I don't know what your background is (Economics student?) but I often find it's great to take a 'refresher' in liberal economic, social and political theory through the few minute videos on http://learnliberty.com/. Pieces from experts like Hayek are hardly easy to read, so always good to learn fundamentals in a simple way.
Have you read any Friedman? He's my favourite, currently reading his Capitalism and Freedom.
Great question, and always tough. It is hard to give a few sentence answer to what is a complex issue. Essentially, I do not believe the rest of society should be burdened by that person. This means that I would not advocate government provided healthcare for that sick person, nor for the government to tax others to transfer wealth to them. Instead, I would advocate that their family and those who care for them take on this responsibility if they so choose, as well as privately funded charities and individuals who see value in helping."... and at some point you have to know that the very thing you've been taught to be afraid of, you've now grown into" - Kai Greene

I believe we need a state. I am not an anarchist. We need a state to enforce the rule of law and provide courts to make sure things like contracts are enforced. We should also use the state to provide goods or services where it is more efficient and effective than any other means (hardly ever).
This is mainly a US thing. The classical liberals, known as liberals then, advocated liberalism. I'm not sure of the US history but I believe post 1950s the Left started to take on this title. It is interesting that those who would most love to destroy the values of liberalism have been thrust the title of liberals. True liberalism is now often referred to as conservatism or libertarianism, but depending on where you live these again might mean totally different things. Classical liberalism is now universal for true liberalism."... and at some point you have to know that the very thing you've been taught to be afraid of, you've now grown into" - Kai Greene
