I just wanted to vent about the past 4 nights at work....
Last night in PICU we were staffed for a **** night. 18 bed unit. Census of 16. 6 nurses on. So, nothing crazy... a couple 3 pt assignments. .. that's doable. One of our nurses leaves in report due a family emergency. 5 nurses for 16 patients. I take the 4 pt assignment. Our acuity should be a 1 or 2 patient ratio per nurse. . .
Then to make it better, we get two NEW ONSET DKA admissions. Fck our sweet lives. Including a 12 year old and a 10 month old. I've never seen a DKA so young.
We finally get 2 more nurses to come in. 6 nurses for 18 patients. I still have a 4 pt assignment because our MVP nurse took the two DKAs (which are normally 1:1s).
I got home 17 hrs later. I feel like my brain got kicked repeatedly last night. Hold me.BFing mom. Pediatric ICU Nurse. Farm girl stuck in the Sin City. BJJ Purple belt.

No. its probably rare these days.
Years ago the hospital I was at ran out of pulse ox monitors for the floor, so any patient on a PCA had to go to SICU. They paid me my base + OT + 30$-45$ and hour to come in and babysit 2 floors patients on PCAs. I worked for a month straight during that shortage.Last edited by South Side Stev; 02-14-2015 at 01:26 PM.

Hot damn. Thats some cali pay right der. I would work straight 16s for that ****. Hope you survive it, though. It sounds like you are doing work for that $$
Ours does. When times get desperate and you have to make patient ratios you have to start adding on the incentive.
I am per diem so on weeks I have no shifts I have gone in and worked 5 straight 12s.. a little over $100/hr.... x12....x5.What's Spicy Training For?? LIFE MOTHER F-ER!

Our central staffing picks what the bonus will be . A lot if the time it's 10$ more and hour, but if we are super short.... the bonus can be double pay. It's cheaper to pay nurses extra than the malpractice lawsuit that's bound to happen from neglect and understaffing.

Yeah, the thigh highs are hard because I have thigh fat so they show through my scrubs (lump above the band) an the full stocking is hot as hell. They need to make a more breathable material. I already sweat like a mofo when I get in to work. Coffee+shower+workout before work...add in california summer and Im disgusting before I even really get started.

For BSN brehs/brehettes, much debt were you guys in once you graduated? I failed chem last semester so i have to wait another year to get into the program, (had B+ and A's in all other classes.. fuk chem). Since im going to be a 5 year, i decided to minor in nutrition next year and get my diabetes certificate to add onto my bachelors in nursing degree. By the time i graduate ill be around 137k in debt..
should i just get my 2 year rn degree.. or is that much debt normal & worth it? fukfukfukDeadlift: 435

wtf has happened to school costs?!?
Graduated in 2004 owing 12k. 4 year degree from a very small state school with high NCLEX pass rate, applied for scholarships and grants etc, lived off campus like a pauper and worked the whole time to limit debt... parents paid for nothing.
137k is painful...What's Spicy Training For?? LIFE MOTHER F-ER!

damn man, I have about 17k from 2 year and I feel like chit about that. Are you going to a private school or something? Id consider doing 2 year than going back for bachelors while you are working. I have to knock statistics out and then I can sign up for the rn-bsn which people have told me should cost me about 10k but Ill obviously be able to pay for it while working.
