Its all genetics. You can't really do anything about it. Just eat!
Depends on what kind of lifting. Anything thats pushes you down with high resistance will stunt your growth a bit. Try to avoid things like heavy squats. I guess light squats or no weight squats are ok. Stuff like bench press will not stunt growth because your laying down there fore there is no tension on your legs.

He can do squats all he wants but heavy ones will definitely stunt growth but its not like its gonna take away 3 inches because he's done the majority of his growing already.

Also males grow til they are 22. So you may get a couple inches if your lucky but don't count on it.

    Please GO!

OP do working out, do deadlifts, and Squats. Heavy, but with a proper form.

I think it's even scientific approved that working out releases Human Growth Hormons, so it might be possible that you get an inch more. But it's most genetics.
At least I believe this theory, because all in my family are < 5'10 and i'm 6'1 and still growing, I'm working out for years now (did other sports before my start 6 month ago)

I'm not telling him to stop doing squats. I think squats are great but they will stunt growth. Personally at 17-18 I wouldn't care about growth.

This may just be a myth but my chiropractor told me when I was 15 and 16 to sleep with my legs hanging off the bed and gravity would naturally pull them down and cause my body to grow.

He also told me to hang from a pull up bar with a super wide grip for a minute every day to stretch my growing bone plates in my back to help my shoulders get wider.

I think he was full of bs, but it's worth a try.

yeah, but it's not permanently, it's something disc related (pushes water out of your discs, same as water comes in when you sleep --> you're taller in the morning). So doing heavy squats isn't bad at all

and working out realeases growth hormones, so you're able to grow taller in puberty

lol you're 6'6 u don't have to have any worries tough

Please stop. Do not give bad advice. Having a heavy amount of weight for 5 minutes out of the 1440 minutes in a day will not stunt growth. You place more stress on yourself by standing on your legs for a much longer time. OP, lift all you want without worrying about stunting your growth. Eat enough fats and calories to give your body what it needs to grow. Get enough sleep and hope to grow 2 more inches. Exercises will not make you grow more.

If you are still growing you can definently stretch the bones to make them bigger. I don't know about hanging off the bed with legs or hanging from a pul up bar but dumbbell pullovers would definently give you a bigger rib cage.

Kind of wierd to see you guys argue so much..... lol =)

My only worry is to not grow taller. I'm closer to 6'7" but I don't want to be any taller lol
If you don't want to grow taller, and you believe Heavy squats can mess with growth, I suppose you load up on them huh?

I would say that there isn't really evidence that Heavy Squats mess with growth, but at the same time, I don't think they would really HELP.
I have heard from reliable sources (and I don't mean the meatheads at the gym, lol) that heavy squating can slightly compress you spine, but that leads more to back pain decades in the future than to make/keep you short.

So OP, while I don't really now of any tried+true method to get taller I would say:

-Take in good nutrition, macro nutrints, and probably a multivitamin-
-Stretch- (hey, yeah I know that isn't probably going to improve height, but everybody should pretty much stretch everyday for general health)
-do something to help decompress your spine- (outerspace would probably be best, and probably gain you an inch or two, but sadly not available, so got for something like hang from a chin up bar, as someone else mentioned. probably won't work, but worth a shot)

(BTW, for myself, pushing 5.11 when I've only been 15 for 3 months, I'm not at all worried, so Sqauts 3x a week? yes please! )

STFU. You don't know ****. Of course if you do a couple of sets of heavy squats it will not stunt growth but if you are doing them over a long peroid of time it will start to take effect. I've talked to a chiropractor about this before and he said it keeps the spine compressed and is not good over a long period of time. I suggest you do a little research before jumping on people like this you little ****

Your research is a chiropractor. That's like me going to a Doctor and saying is it okay to take protein supplements and him saying its bad for you don't do it.

Running and jumping puts more pressure on your spine than squatting, up to 5x, you'd basically have to squat 5x your bodyweight, so you're telling me all those tall mother****ing basketball players have stunted their growth, or volleyball players, look how tall they are. If you even type: will lifting weights stunt my growth or anything similar to that, 99.9% of the websites will tell you no it doesn't, in fact it may even produce a better chance for growth.
Squatting long periods of time, have you ever heard of taking breaks or switching up programs to prevent a burnout? Jesus christ you're ****ing stupid.

I'm 6'1 right now, just turned 17 years old... I've grown about 2 inches since I started lifting, and I got X-Rays done on my spine back in February, and my doctor said I might grow another 2 or 3 inches. I think it's BS when people say that lifting stunts growth.

HGH is probably your only hope, but you stop growing at 21 so you could wait and hopefully you'll get taller.

Holy **** you are one big dumb fuk. Stop making up stats. Who the fuk told you running puts 5x more pressure on your spine. That one made lol. By squatting for long periods of time I mean squatting on your weekly basis for like 1 year+ not continuously squatting you *******. Obvisouly its not gonna make a substantial difference. In most cases your not gonna lose 2 inches off your potential height because of squatting.

Lol if you watch runners in slow motion their basically bounding or jumping you tard.
I forgot add that running and jumping puts more pressure on legs AND spine, so there now you know.

Basically by your logic, deadlifting will make my arms 2 inches longer

Playing sports for 1+ year continuously will make me 2 inches shorter.

Lol, ***got I'm not making up stats go search it up in google you dumb ****.

You know the 2 inch arm lame excuse for an example you made there is totally irrelevant to this. Height doesn't work the same way as your muscles you dumb fuk. And there is no ****in site on google that says "running stunts your growth 5x more that squats"

Running puts something like 9x your bodyweight on your hips. So?

Squats aren't going to make keep you from growing taller, but heavy back squats aren't the best for the spine. They aren't going to mess with growth if you're in your older teens+ (and even less likely if you help your spine afterwards)

If you're worried, you can always change from Back to Front Squats also.....

    my 2 cents....

EDIT: ^ I think it actually IS pretty similar Rob. Your arms have bones too, after all. It was a wierd slope idea by unfocused, though.

You can always purchase an old medival rack..... lol.
