    100k a year salary. How much should your house be worth?

    IMO a 500k house is about right.

    Expenses are manageable

    Property taxes are about $10k/yr.

    Big enough to live comfortably.

    I'll gross about 100K this year. I rent a $680/month 1-bedroom now but am eventually looking to buy something valued at 100-150K in cash.

    I'm in no hurry to sign my life away to a bank in the form of a mortgage if I can help it. The main reason the economy is the way it is now is the unfortunately standard practice of people taking on huge amounts of debt they can't manage and can never hope to pay back.

    Depends on location. Honestly, in the south (or atleast the areas I live in in Texas), you can get a killer house for a good sized family max of 400k. For a bachelor? THats like god-house mode.

    Yes location is everything. Live in modest home (cheapest on the block by far -score! And bought near bottom). The home was about 1.5x my salary at the time. I gross more than the mortgage now...and I STILL feel like its a big chunk every month after taxes etc (I pay an extra 1k a month to pay house off faster now - 30 yr should be paid off in 11 years).

    Personally I'd think it would depend on the mortgage you get. If I could theoretically borrow something for a house at .05% fixed rate (impossible I know, but this is just a hypothetical question), I'd push the margins on what I could borrow and significantly adjust that as the rate goes up.

    I'll also have to take the stability of my job/income into account, and what lifestyle I would want. The range on the house varies widely for me so yeah this post isn't going to help and I'll just end it here.
