If you can do pushups, shouldnt you be able to bench press your own body weight?

So Im kind confused. So when you do pushups, your doing your own body weight. in my case its 145 lb. when you bench press you add weight. how come its more difficult to bench press than do pushups? shouldnt you immediately be able to bench press 145 lb since thats how much your lifting up and down in pushups? (in my case)

If you could hold your feet off the ground and do a pushup then yeah you could bench your bodyweight. But when your feet are on the ground you really only push like 75% of your body up if that.

Pushups are around 70% of your body weight if done properly. Planche pushups (pushups with your feet coming off the ground) are much more difficult than benchpressing your body weight, as it requires far more stability and balance.

A good goal for your bench press is 1.5x your body weight.

You'd need to do a handstand pushup to be doing 100% of your weight.

Cant really answer that because strength has nothing to do with when you can see your pecs. With time you will develop you pecs and they will be prominent. Bench press is a good exercise for it. But dont always bench press, it will probably turn into a rotator cuff issue....well at least thats what happened to me.

Physics tells us it's actually closer to 30-40% of bodyweight depending on angle of body

your weight is spread between two points.

load up a bar and pick up one side and its not too difficult. Try to lift the whole thing and its a whole new ball game

If you got into a handstand position & did a pushup then yes you would be doing 100% of your weight. When you use your feet to help sustain your weight, your weight is spread over a larger area. The best analogy i could give would be a bridge, Each side of the bridge is like your hands & feet & helps sustain it. If you removed one side connecting to the mainland, immediately a s*it ton more weight/pressure is put onto the other side to help suspend it in the air.
Thats why pushups with your feet at an incline are typically much harder, apart from it using slightly different muscles a lot more of your weight is being focused into the body-portion to do the pushup.

I'd estimate a standard pushup to be only around 40-50% of your body weight. Though i could be wrong, you could work it out with some basic physics knowledge.
