NASA/JPL successfully landed Curiosity on Mars. Curiosity is 5 times heavier than Spirit and Opportunity and went through the most complex landing procedure ever attempted. NASA is now 4 for 4 on Martian rovers. Without a doubt one of the greatest feats of human engineering.
Today's the day. After eight long months of travel over 350 million miles, Curiosity is set to attempt its landing tonight. This thread will have all of the links and info needed to prepare for the landing and to discuss the event afterword. I'll bump this throughout the day.
When does the landing take place:
- 10:31 PM PST/ 1:31 AM EST

Reference for how large Curiosity is:
Just to put everything in perspective, putting Curiosity on Mars is like landing a nuclear power Mini Cooper on autopilot 350 million miles away from home. Let's hope everything goes off without a hitch, for JPL and NASA have dared mighty things. Boldly they rode and well, into the jaws of death, into the mouth of hell.

T-9 hours and counting.

The coolest feature of curiosity is the ChemCam which is a high powered laser that will be used to vaporize rocks on the surface and then perform a spectroscopic analysis on the components of the rock. This can be performed up to 25 feet away. So in 9 hours, we will hopefully have a one ton rover armed with a laser beam on the surface of Mars.
Also, here are some recent photos from a Martian orbiter of the Gale Crater landing site:

Agreed. I really wish I knew the exact mechanism that disconnect the cables once the rover has touched down (I have a terrible image in my mind about a flawless landing followed by one of the cables failing to disconnect and Curiosity being dragged across the Martian surface as the rockets fly away). That said, JPL are the best of the best of the best and literally anything that we can come up with has been discussed for hours on end in Pasadena. I'm still terrified however.

Can't wait to see if it survives.
Heres an awesome video explaining the landing.

Short lived long remembered!
"Because society has pushed them into corners, forcing them to believe they are losers When in fact everyone has so much potential to achieve such magic and wonder, but as I alluded it to they are continually told they cant do it/they'll fail, so they start believing it The truth is: there's no such thing as a "loser" its just a label to make people feel bad"

Indeed.
T-7:34 until touchdown.
I would highly recommend people check out this mornings mission debriefing for the specifics, but all that will be transported around the landing time is Curiosity's signal that it landed. The Odyssey orbiter will be the primary source to pick up this signal and send it to Earth, but due to a gyroscopic issue last month, there is a chance Odyssey will miss the touchdown in which case, Curiosity will broadcast directly to Earth. Either way, there is a chance that we will not have information for a few hours if Odyssey misses the flyby. As of this morning however, everything was set on course.
