What octane fuel should I be using for a 9.5:1 compression ration engine?

Been using 87 for the longest time, but people are telling me to use 89 or 91? engine is an SR20DE

You don't need high octane fuel until you start getting into the 11-12:1 comp ratios. And even now with direct injection you can still run 87 in cars as high as 14:1 like the skyactiv engines in the new Mazdas. 9.5:1 is a pretty low comp these days and won't have det issues on 87, could even run lower than that, not that you could get it.

It depends more on where he is running his timing. High octane fuel is just more resistant to detonation therefore he can increase his ignition advance and pickup some good hp/tq by running higher octane fuels. Most high octane fuel will actually help keep the engine clean as well. I won't even put 87 in my tractor.

most modern engines can run on 87 as there are knock sensors that will prevent pre-detonation. it is best to used what the manufacturer suggests though. and if the car is tuned for a specific octane, use that octane. likewise, a chevy POS quarter liter people mover probably wont run any better with a higher octane because it isnt tuned for it.

There is such a thing as octane creep, the octane required for an engine increases as ages. Carbon deposits raise compression/create hot spots, valve guides/rings can wear allowing small amounts of oil into the combustion chamber. You're probably fine with 87 in reality but use whatever the manufacturer recommends.

200 hp from 2.0l engine that's naturally aspirated. Compression is high so it needs a fuel more resistant to knocking.

Premium is no better then regular or mid grade as far as quality goes. The only difference is that premium is more resistant to knock than regular. That means it takes more energy for it to ignite. So using premium on a regular car not only are you paying more upfront for the gas, but also you're going to be less efficient with it cause its not burning right.

No, bro. The misc says it's better for the fuel system. So that means your pump/injectors will run better on 93. It's a fact.

    lol.

If the misc comes to a consensus on something it must be correct.

It's not my money being wasted, so I don't care.

If you are one of those phaggots that thinks a civic is a race car and want to race and beat on it than yeah run 93. But if you are just putting around and using the car to commute with, 87 will be fine the computer will compensate.

Where in my post did I said it was a race car? Putting in the right octane gas will actually give you better mileage than putting in a lower octane. Like on my Cobalt SS turbo, the difference between filling up on regular and premium is a little more than $3 only. For $12 and change extra a month, I'll put the right gas in my car.

This is completely inaccurate premium burns slower when ignited therefore also burns more complete read less unburnt fuel being forced out of the exhaust. For this same reason it also allows you to run more advance at higher engine loads which again causes the engine to run more efficiently. You only start to see reduced fuel mileage when you step into E85 this is do to the fact that it takes more fuel due to the mixture however you can further advance your ignition and create crazy power for 2 bucks a gallon.

I sure wish non car people would read up on cars more...
    fact 1.
engines designed for use with 87 octane fuel need just that. Do Not run higher grade fuels in them. the reasons are unstable knock signal to engines computer. unstable signal sets check engine light, most cars go into "limp" mode when this happens to protect engine from itself. I have had to repair many cars and trucks for this very problem.
as an example when an engine doesn't set a knock signal it goes to full advance to find one. if it cannot see its full advance signal it automatically sets a light. engineering for most cars is done so as a car made for the American market can be sold in places that have worse fuels then here. Mexico being one. 87 is considered good fuel there.

oh by the way if your still dumb enough to fill your tank with premium fuel and get a light you have to flush out the fuel tank & filters then get the system flushed out to get it to quit turning on the light.

    New plan!
    re-designed Farmers carry for distance.
    currently with a single 45lb plate(with grips)
1 set is 1 each of suit case carry right side, then left side, chest high carry(both hands) then a two handed waiter walk(over head carry).
the key is finding a mild hill 4-6% grade approx 300 feet each way. 1 set is two trips up and back with the plate in a different position each pass. switching side every other set on the start.
    2 trips up and back = 1 set x 4
