Knox unflavored gelatin as protein powder?

I've been wanting to put protein powder back into my diet, but I can't because I'm following the paleo diet (yes, I know, most people here are against it and find it stupid, but I really like it and I feel great on it so I'm sticking to it.) For those of you who aren't familiar with the paleo diet it is basically meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, and fat. No grain, wheat, gluten, dairy, soy, sugar, or legumes.

My problem is that I hate having "real food" for breakfast. Once the day goes on I have no problem eating meat, eggs, fish, etc...but for breakfast? It makes me want to throw up! SO, for breakfast I usually have a smoothie made with fruits, vegetables, ice, sometimes coconut milk or almond milk, and a small handful of nuts. Definitely lacking protein, so I've been wanting to add a scoop of protein powder to my smoothie, but there are no protein powders that are fully paleo (and the closest ones are just way out of my price range.) I just had a light bulb go off in my head and I thought maybe I could add some knox unflavored gelatin to my smoothies. Would that work? I've been reading that gelatin is an incomplete protein source and I don't know much about that, so I have no idea what this means. I mean, I know what it literally means-there are some amino acids missing, but I don't know what this means to my body. Will my body not use the protein if it is incomplete (in the way that it would use a regular protein powder)? Thanks!

as long as it isn't your only/main protein source (ie you get the missing AAs from elsewhere), you should be fine. vegetarians/vegans often combine different incomplete plant proteins.

Would it work to add a capsule of essential amino acids?

A whole packet only has 8g of protein, and wouldn't it make your shake a weird taste and texture? I've cooked with it before and it smells god-awful.

aren't you making it a bit too complicated? if you don't consume grains and legumes to help combine different AA profiles, then there are still plenty dead critters to provide you with EAAs. and if it's only 8 grams per packet as oregonchick pointed out, then i wouldn't personally bother with it in the first place. how can you not get enough protein on paleo anyway? eat your meat, fish, eggs and poultry.

I'm not familiar with the Paleo rules but how about egg whites? I've never tried smoothies with them myself but I noticed that the cartoned egg whites claim they make great smoothies...

that'd make eggs a LOT worse than some sht quality protein that is completely processed and comes out of a factory but must be superior because it was a pork hide in former life . . .

sorry for the offense OP, couldn't help it.

My plan was to use two packets and try to see if I can get it in bulk anywhere. And yeah, I think it might give it a weird texture, so I was just going to make some unflavored jello with it and just add that instead of pure powder.

I know some people do that, but I'm afraid of eating raw eggs. Maybe I could try cooking some egg whites and then adding them to my smoothie. Sounds gross, but I have a vitamix, which makes smoothies 1000000% smooth, and I bet if I added a strong flavor, like berries, it would mask the taste.

I'm pretty sure the ones in the carton (AllWhites for example) are pasturized and safe to consume "uncooked". I doubt the FDA or whomever would allow them to advertise them for smoothies otherwise.

edited to add this link: http://www.allwhiteseggwhites.com/re...ie-Recipes.cfm for ALLWhite smoothies.

I've made smoothies with egg whites for sure. I like using almond milk, bananas, PB2, sf maple syrup and stevia with lots of ice.

ah, that should be easy to fix. you don't have to have protein at breakfast (or with every meal). just make sure you get enough protein at the end of the day.
