If we had such a vast selection of people to choose from such as what China and USA have, due to a larger demographic, we would be impossible to beat.
If we are able to choose such a high level of sportsmen and athletes from such a low demographic, if we had a higher demographic there would be no questions to our superiority

Some North Korean lifter came out of nowhere to set a new Olympic clean and jerk record in the 56kg class. And he was lifting out of the B group, too (most of the better lifters lift in the A group).

168kg C&J @ under 56kg BW. I think he's only the 5th person or so to do 3x bodyweight in C&J in competition. We'll have to see if Wu Jingbiao can match or exceed that later today in the group A finals.

Canoe/Kyaking (sprint and distance)

BMXing

Mountain Biking

Track Cycling

All the equestrian events

Sailing

Table Tennis

Most of these are brought in because all countries are relatively good at something -- and they want their relatively good hobby or leisure activity brought in to play.

In all fairness if China doesn't think its a good medal chance, It doesn't bother sending the athletes, Where as Australia will just send anybody with a B grade qualifying mark. Hence why we send more athletes but win less medals. Its more about exposure then anything.
