- most hardware stores only carry hot rolled steel, which is much weaker, and no steel benders use it, so you will be bending understandarized strengths of nails (on top of a ton of natural variance amongst steel made in the same fashion)
-If they do carry cold rolled steel, it will be very expensive
-threaded rods are much weaker because the measurement is taken by the diameter of the thread, since the threads protrude, there is less total metal to get the same diameter. No one bends threaded rod. It will also cut through your pads much faster.
Look up steel distributors in your area and ask for 3/16,1/4, 5/16 CRSLast edited by Newbtime; 07-28-2012 at 12:54 PM.

Don't bend bolts above grade 9, they can snap... which is pretty dangerous when bending double overhand. Or wrap a towel around your neck when you do it.
Bolts come in grade 2,5,7,8,9 (and I think like grade 11)
No markings on end of bolt head= grade 2
3 markings on bolt head = grade 5
5 markings on bolt head =grade 7
6 =grade 8
once you get above grade 9 they start getting weird random patterns... you can usually tell if a bolt is high grade because its pretty heavy and sounds different.
The only way you're going to get consistent steel batches, is to call up Ironmind or FBBC (not sure if FBBC exists anymore?) and ask them what grade their steel is (there are numerous different grading systems - so be aware of that) then call local steel distributors and ask if they have that grade in the thickness you want. If you just go down to a steel distributor and ask for CRS in X diameter, you'll get variance.
Chances are you won't even find CRS with the same manufacturing process and grade as the main standardized brands in nail bending. So if you don't care, and just want to bend cheaper... just buy what ever CRS they have (not hrs)
