This will be my sons 2nd year in public school. We usually have a sh*tload of supplies to buy. Paper towels, toilet tissue, hand soap, boxes of Kleenex. He is middle school this year so will be the first year we will not be spending so much on supplies.

What is really bad was when he was in private school his tuition alone was $380 per month-not even including reqistration, books and about $300-400 in supplies and the $4 per day lunches and uniforms which could only be purchased from one particular store! UGH!!

Aware me on private schools (I'm from EU) are they better than public schools? Different emphasis?

I've spent the last couple hours reading people's comments under articles on news sites. I want to ****ing punch the wall after this.

There will never be unity. **** those who harbor hate in the name of religion. And **** our education system. Private schools probably are better.

Although, our politicians are bred by them...so nevermind.

Good point, the education system, the media, the society, it all harbors a lot of hate and ignorance, personally I think when it comes to Education, this country is decades behind on many other western nations. But then you have ignorance and hate everywhere.

We put him in private school at 3 years old (PreK3) because they were the only ones who took kids that young. Pblic schools here are 5-6 year old starters. We left him in private school until last year. Smaller class size was a great bonus. He didn't do well when we changed him to a different private school for the 6th grade. So he had to repeat and we decided to try public schools. He had a great teacher last year who got him reading better and enjoying school. He made A-B honor roll. Pretty much the same lessons but at the private school he had at least 2 hours of homework EVERY night. Last year he had home work 2 times. He had the same exact books at public school as he did in private.

The school he left was a bunch of stuck up, snotty kids with rich parents where the mothers did not work so they spent all day up at the school hob-knobbing. I am glad he left that place!!!

My friend's husband is best friends with the Kaleka family (son of the gurdwara president who died trying to take down the shooter), and it's effing crazy how close to home things can hit. I used to be an observant Sikh along with my brother. I'm glad we cut our hairs and look less different now, but I will always admire those who continue climbing this uphills battle by still appearing blatantly different. Especially in America.

    brb moving to another country
inb4 "good, we didn't want you here anyway"
brb born and raised American and everyone in the community I know, including myself, are productive, tax-paying individuals of American society
brb not getting to know your neighbors and judging them based off looks like school children

Considering the amount of public money that goes to education, it should be way up there. I don't know what they do with all that money.

Then I read articles like this

    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/29/op...=1&ref=opinion

which boils down to "lots of kids fail to finish high school. Of those, most of them did bad in Algebra. I know! Let's stop teaching Algebra! It's useless anyway..."

With this kind of attitude, I am surprised we are literate at all.

Our schools are starting 3 weeks later this year because they are trying to save money at the schools. We have no lottery in Alabama so we bitch and blame it on that most of the time.

Ahh okay I see. So smaller class size, better individual attention etc. But wow lol yeah good thing he found a better fit at another school!

and all they did was give kids more homework, no after school activities
and no fun..in 2 years they only went to 1 school trip and this is supposed to be the best school in the area ? nah best thing I did was taking my kid out of there and put her in public school
where they go on awesome trips regularly , farms , zoo, museums etc..
when she went to private school I always wondered what they do with all that money other than overpay some mediocre teachers, principal and a couple of janitors, there's isn't much they did to justify that $600

it depends on the school districts but generally public schools offer more for less I am also convinced they have better teachers but again it greatly depends on where you live
I think in the EU academically speaking schools are superior but .. in the US schools offer so much more than just that

yep . My son's registration is coming up which will run me about 300 bucks and then its 4,000 dollars a year in tuition costs plus school supplies and clothes.

People always forget demographics when it comes to America. We always compare ourselves with European countries but we forget that America is the third largest country in the world. While we're not even close to India or China we are still very large compared to many European countries. In sheer numbers alone it becomes much harder to provide quality services for citizens when you have such a large population base. It also dosnt help that state governments have come to rely so heavily on federal funding in order to operate efficiently. European countries dont all rely on the European Union to fund their schools and each European state has a far smaller population than that of America, hell California alone likely has a larger population than any individual European country. So as you can imagine its easier for European countries to allocate resources for schools when they have much smaller populations and almost accross the board European countries have waaaaaaaay higher tax rates. Its not even close.

I think the scandenavian countries tax somewhere around 60-80% of yearly income.

Thats my partial explenation of the differences in education between US and Europe. I always hear Europeans make generalizations that European schools are far superior and that the American education system is terrible, but with all the factors/differences its nearly like comparing apples and oranges.
