Flint isnt close to Detroit. Its like an hour drive up 75 through some of Michigans most wealthy cities. Yeah Detroit has issues, and yeah, some areas are sketchy, but downtown isnt that bad and there are actually some decent neightboorhoods. I used to do PI work and I really only had a couple of bad days. Highland Park was way worse, IMO.
