Hi all,
I've heard lifting anything heavy puts pressure on the abdominal region which is bad for a small Hiatal Hernia. I asked the specialist I went to see could I lift weights and he advised against it. I should probably give up lifting but I really don't want to and I'm currently struggling with the notion that I won't be doing it anymore.
Is there anyone who has an Hiatal Hernia who still lifts etc? If you keep on lifting does the hernia get worse or bigger over time? My routine is below. I usually do 3-5 sets of 8-16 reps with the weight being 20-35 pounds depending on the exercise. I don't do ab exercises as I presume these are bad for Hiatal Hernias in putting pressure on the abs. I usually tense up my abs when lifting too-
Monday
chest dumbbell press
chest dumbbell flys
chest pushups
triceps chair dips
triceps dumbbell french press
Wenesday
lats overhand pullups
lats underhand pullups
biceps dumbbell curls
biceps hammer curls
Friday
legs lunges
legs stiff legged dead lifts
legs calf raises
shoulders dumbell press
shoulders side raise
shoulders reverse flys

cant say anything about lifting with one, but you might want to ask a Dr

On March I was diagnosed with a small hiatal hernia (endoscopy showed along with GERD, eisho****itis and ulcer). My doctor said it wasn't bad at the time of the diagnosis. GERD was average. He said all that was caused mostly of my stressfull life. I asked him about weight training and he was sure it gets things worse.
About a month ago I switched my training to the Max-OT program and found it promising with great results. However I am getting worse on GERD with a constant burn below my mouth in my throat, no matter what I eat. This period is in general full of stress on me and it surely affects GERD but I suspect heavier lifting has gotten hiatal hernia worse and that shifts GERD.
Sad thing is that after all these years off I finally started again weight training and have great results and enthusiasm, but I have that little f*##ing devil inside me that wants me to quit.
I feel that heavier lifting puts extra abdominal pressure that "tears" more the diaphragm between thorax and abdomen organs producing a more and more larger hernia. Do you know if a laparoscopic operation completely solves hiatal hernia and can you start lifting again without any future problems;Last edited by MikeNick; 08-23-2012 at 01:38 AM.

Yea I know it's almost a yr old but what the hell, yes the operation can completely solve the hiatal hernia and yes you can lift after 6-8 weeks without any future issues. Had this surgery in december and was lifting light weights within a couple weeks. Couldn't go heavier for close to 2 months because it hurt certain spots where they entered thru the stomach area to do the surgery but amd fine now and have been for many months. No more GERD, no more nexium, hell even the at times constant gas issues are largely gone.

I assume the hiatal hernia is the one by the belly button? If so, I've had one for almost 2 years now and I've never stopped lifting. I did give up dead lifts (rack pulls seem to be fine though) because that seemed to agitate it, and DB rows also didn't feel good for awhile. It would occasionally hurt and cause cramping, but I bought a belt for my heavier sets of squats and rack pulls, and that has taken care of any issues that I was having.

Exercises for and good for Hiatal Hernia
I was recently diagnosed with a Hiatal hernia and gained a few lbs because I stopped working out before finding out what it was, because of the pressure in my chest because I thought it was a heart attack. Now that I know what it is, I've been treating it with Accupuncture, papaya enyzmes, aloe vera water and the chiropractor. I've also changed my diet and want to begin exercising again, I was an avid lifter and runner. I think I got the hernia from stress and lifting too heavy. I am a bit apprehensive about getting back into working out because I am not sure what exercises are good for the hernia that won't aggravate it. I really want to lift again and especially target the legs, abs and glutes but I am not sure which exercises I can do. I feel like the only female on here that has one. Can anyone give any advice?
