i'm 18 years old, 6'1" and 140 pounds. should i try to gain weight then work out or start working out now so i can gain weight as i exercise?

Well you have to find a workout program that works for you. I suggest ones with compound lifts. Learn good form and disregard the weight when learning form. As you get more experience always train hard have progression in mind (adding weight) . For diet eat clean but eat alot and its OK to have some junk here and d there but ask yourself, "will this help me reach my goal?" Im glad to help id appreciate some positive rep

Fast metabolism is broscience man. I used to think that I couldn't gain weight too, but you're really just not eating enough. Variation in human metabolic rate is only around 5-8%. Split up your meals into smaller portions, it'll make it easier to get all your calories in. From your stats, you'll probably want to consume 3000-3500 calories a day.
If you don't lift, all the weight you'll gain will be fat. Google these: Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, Babylover's Starting Strength, Wendler 5/3/1. Learn these concepts: macronutrient consumption, progressive overload, compound movements, proper recovery time.
As a beginner, expect to gain lean mass at around 1 lb/week max. Lifting is important, but eating enough and resting enough are what you really want to focus on.
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, this is what worked for me. I still have a ways to go myself.
