That sumo stance looked very natural for you Brad ... 500 was easy (and that vid made you look like you have really long legs )
Great pressing today ... was the 380 competition worthy? If so, then you're looking good for that 400 bench in the comp

And yes ... I know my youngest daughter could make great use of that pic

Sumo feels pretty good, but it's rough breaking the bar off the floor. lol I know that's just the way sumo is, but I really don't like it. haha I have an odd body. lol I actually do have very long legs and I also have long arms too for my height. I measured everything yesterday to put into a deadlift chart to figure out which style best suits my body type and it came up with conventional. I'm much quicker off the floor with conventional. I think I would pull more with sumo though because of the smaller range of motion.

The 380 was actually pretty easy. Well, it was quick off the chest, but the lockout was about what I expected. lol I should get my 402 at the comp. Honestly, I'm not worried about my bench or deadlift. I'm worried I'll get struck with a bout of arthritis the week of the comp.

I've got short legs and a long torso so I'd have a very short range to pull through for sumo but whenever I've tried it it has smashed my knees (I think I have trouble finding a start position where my knees aren't angled to begin with). It looks like you'd have great strength for the sumo pulls if you pursued that lift

How much do you think body types actually play into this stuff? I've never even thought about it honestly. I used to think I had short arms, but apparently, I don't.

No problem. If they make something out of any of those pics, I'd like to see it.

I don't think it makes a lot of difference TBH, because we all work with the leverages we've got and our bodies being made of levers, when you shorten one you lengthen another .. I actually don't think a lift is any easier it's just that everyone's technique will look different .. 400lbs is still 400lbs ... or in your case, 600lbs is still 600lbs

    410 is a huge weight without a spot .. let alone 500 or 600
I'd be a little bit worried about catching the rebound if I had to dump a 600lb bar in the rack

I agree. I used to think I wasn't built to deadlift because I thought I had short arms. haha I actually don't and I think that benefits me on the deadlift. I always thought I had a good bench because I had short arms. lol I was way off!

John doesn't come over that often. He comes over when he can and since he's on call for his job a lot, it doesn't work out as often as I'd like. Just his presence is worth 50lbs in all my lifts. Plus, he'll threaten to beat my ass if I don't make a lift.

I've had a few wrecks over the years dumping weights while training on my own. The worst incident was back in 2006 while I was benching alone in my gym. I got some stupid idea to try 500 for a single at the end of my workout. :/ I had a brand new refrigerator sitting right next to where I was benching and after getting the weight firmly implanted in my chest, I began the dreaded windmill to get the weights off. Well, it didn't work out like that. I let too many off one side and it flipped straight over me and crashed into the new fridge. My wife came running down stairs screaming what the phuck are you doing down here? I said, bench press, what else?

John doesn't come over that often. He comes over when he can and since he's on call for his job a lot, it doesn't work out as often as I'd like. Just his presence is worth 50lbs in all my lifts. Plus, he'll threaten to beat my ass if I don't make a lift.

Well, it didn't work out like that. I let too many off one side and it flipped straight over me and crashed into the new fridge. My wife came running down stairs screaming what the phuck are you doing down here? I said, bench press, what else?
Have you still got that fridge with the dents in it?

Well, this comp I'm doing in August is about two weeks away so it's time for a small deload. I'm a little beaten up with all the heavy squatting and deadlifting, so I took it easy today. My elbows are suffering from squatting. Christ, it's always something!! lol
Nice to be able to deload with a 520 deadlift

Is the plan for no max type lifts or volume for the next two weeks?

Nope, we had to take get rid of it. The door was smashed so badly it wouldn't close.

No max attempts or really anything above 90%. Just going to cruise for two weeks and rest.

Just an update since it's been a while. lol I've officially retired from PL and I don't regret it for one second. I've went back to more of a bodybuilding workout with higher reps and much lighter weights. Lately, I've been working on doing 100 reps with a specific weight under time constraints. For example, I'll use 100lb dumbbells and see how long it takes me to complete 100 reps. So far, 13:20 is my best time. It's MUCH harder than it appears on paper! I'm doing the same for squats and deadlifts. I'm also pulling the sled again and flipping the tire and my weight has dropped to 209lbs. I'm heading back to 190 and plan to just stay there. My days of seeing how much I can lift are over and I feel much better. Getting up off the floor is no longer a struggle.

I'd post my actual workouts again, but there really isn't anything impressive going on except maybe some body fat loss. haha I also began deadlifting with straps and a double over hand grip. I tore my right bicep early in 2014 for the second time and I've just had it.

Here's a leg pic from the other day.

Okay so this is an example of what I'm doing now. lol Today was deadlift day so I did the following:

    Deadlifts-
    Warm ups:
    320-6
    320-5
    410-5

    370x100 reps

My time to beat was 20:53 from last week, but I added 50lbs to the bar going from 320-370. I managed to complete 100 reps in 23:50.
Most sets consisted of between 6-10 reps....sometimes I'd do a set of 5 and then I could only manage a set of 4 on the last two sets. lol Believe me guys, this is much harder than it looks on paper.

I followed that up with some pulldowns and high rope pulls.

Had a pretty good pump going after this haha And yeah, I video taped the whole thing.

Damn ... I want your legs Brad = awesome mass and definition! Great to see you back! Wait was it that decided you to give up the PL ..... the ongoing RC and knee injuries? Of course you may have backed off on the weights but those are still sick numbers ... you're doing 100 reps on deads with a weight that I can pull for a single

    Deadlifts-
    Warm ups:
    320-6
    320-5

Had a pretty good pump going after this haha And yeah, I video taped the whole thing.
it looks hard enough on paper to me hardNheavy
as a % of your single rep max, what is it?
I struggle with 5 sets of 10 so my legs turn to jelly just thinking about double that volume with a much higher % of SRM
not taking much of a breather between sets if you did those 100 reps in sub 24 minutes - strength and stamina in equal amounts to get through that lot

Thanks Andrew!! I see you're building yourself a home gym. That's a really good idea. It's all the injuries that's made me decide to give it up. There isn't any part of me that doesn't have some sort of tear or nagging injury. I've been doing this for 20+ years and I need a break and to do something different. I don't see me going back to PL anytime in the future. I've already begun to feel better dropping my weights in half and I'm going to stick to it. I'm going to work my way back down to 185 and just live. haha My knees are actually doing quite well without all the heavy squatting.

Thanks Laura!! Yes, I'm doing 100 rep deadlift sessions, but not in one set. I'm doing them under time limits. lol It's still ridiculously hard though. haha Saw your recent pic in your journal. nice lol!

Steve, using 370 is about 60% of my 1RM for deadlifts. I'm no longer in the search for a 700lb deadlift. lol!! It's funny, but I've managed to consistently drop my times every week from just getting in better overall condition. Pulling the sled again and flipping the tire is helping too. Believe me, my whole body is jello by the time I hit 100 reps.

Here's a few workouts from the last week or so.

    2-1-2015

    Squats-
    140-10
    140-10
    190-5

    260x100

    Time: 14:46

    Leg Press-
    740x100

    Time: 12:56

    2-2-2015

    Shoulder Press-
    140x100

    Time: 15:50

    2-3-2015

    Dumbbell Press-
    100's x 100

    Time: 13:14

I do some other rep work with different exercises, but these are my main ones. I do no bench press at all. I'm staying with DBs and my football bar. I can't bench unless my hands are in a neutral grip position.

conditioning seems to be getting better each and every time hardNheavy

you shaved 19 seconds off the time but added 10lb to the weight used - thus an additional 1000lb used over the 100 squats

Leg pressing was a bit slower this session , but after 100 squat reps I am not sure how anyone could even leg press at all

The pup is gorgeous .... I had to show my girls his pic straight away
I love the leg sessions ... 27,000lbs of squats and 74,000lbs of leg presses, so 100,000lbs of leg work in under half an hour
You used to be a bodybuilder before you got into the PL if my memory serves me so the higher rep BB-type regime must feel like 'back to the future'
You're going to be carrying some awesome mass and cuts at 185 ... looking forward to seeing that Brad!

Still training hard even though I tore my rotator cuff AGAIN. lol I began to bench wide again and the weights were beginning to get heavy and I guess I just pushed it too far again. So, I'm training around it once again doing close grip bench and anything that doesn't cause pain like DB Presses etc. I'm right in the 235lb range and 240 will probably happen by the end of the year. I've went about it slowly though.

I had cancer surgery back in June and so far it's in remission. I decided against additional surgery so we'll see how things play out over the next few years. Getting in good shape again has really helped with my confidence in the future. Here's a pic I took today. Not the best quality, but you can see I've put some definite size on my delts, traps and biceps. I haven't done a deadlift in probably 10 months and I don't miss them at all. lol!
