Hope that kid goes to new levels of hell, the shooter douchebag that did that to those kids. They were in kindergarten!!!!!!
Yeah man I'm still in disbelief myself since we move to this small, quaint town in TN which is very similar to Newtown so that my daughter can grow up in a very safe environment.

That seems to be not the case anywhere anymore. It hits hard with my bro in-law since his wife works as a Kindergarten teacher, his daughter is 5 attending kindergarten and his oldest 10 attending 4th grade.

Yeah I hope the mofo burn in a new level of hell.

Indeed - have you heard the world is responding? Yes, including the gun control freaks, but that is expected.

People need to understand guns don't kill people - people kill people. I do believe in the right to protect yourself, but there needs to be a more strict process of who gets what. The fact that the shooters mom was an avid gun collector, her son had some issues, and knew where to get these guns - - I don't know but as a parent - she wasn't showing enough precaution with these dangerous weapons.

Well said, couldn't have typed it any better.

So since the Oregon mall shooting:

    CT school
    Vegas Casino
    California mall parking lot
    and I'm sure numerous others..

The sick and twisted in our country and very few, but they always tend to come out and wreck havoc on innocents. I wish changes were not put into effect after a tragedy but before.

Vid half way down the page, shows shooter and father of one little girl

I agree that guns don't kill people, people kill people.

But we have to ask - if personal firearm ownership is intended primarily for self defense, do we all feel safer or less safe with the prevslence of guns out there? We have security guards armed with guns and metal detectors at schools not because we are concerned about organized crime mafias and mobs but because of children and parents bringing personal firearms to schools. We really need to rethink if guns are making our world a safer place or a more scary and dangerous place. And background checks and screenings aren't the answer either. Once they leave the gun shop the effective control that legislation has is zero.

So maybe require ownership only by law enforcement and govt officials?

I don't know. Either way. Impossible to keep em off the streets and in the wrong hands. Wrong hands - hard to judge that. Shooter had zero previous criminal activity and his mom owned them legally and was a collector, heard she had 4-5 others....

Honestly, the real root cause of the killings this week was the breakdown of family and social supports that allowed the killer to become so detached from society that he felt mass murder was his only option. Whether anger, desperation, sadness or whatever other emotion he felt; if he had a more supportive network of community around him, this may have been averted. Every day people lose their jobs, lose child custody, have a bitter breakup, etc - but most of us have a support structure of family and friends to help us get through the dark days.

The gun debate is only a question of how many people he would kill once he lost touch with reality - not if he would kill.

Hypothetical death count if the murder weapon was :
    Knife
    Hand gun
    Fully automatic assault rifle
    Nuclear device

See my point? Once society failed him - He was going to kill. The question is how "deadly" of a weapon he was going to do it with.

Personally, I'd like to focus on the first step and fix the social issue instead of just trying to limit the body count once he slips into madness.

I dont really debate things on the net. It never seems to resolve anything.
Most of the people debating only do it to cause problems. I have yet to see anyone change there opinion due to an e-debate.

He was sick. Had a gun not been available he would have reeked just as much havoc on that school with another weapon.

saw a documentary the other day re: Progress and humanity. They made a good point. Humans haven't physically evolved (including all of anatomy - brain, muscles, limb length, etc) to any discernible extent for the past 50k-100k years but our technology has grown by leaps and bounds in just a few hundred years.

So basically we are trying to run software on a hardware system that is best suited for hunter/gathering.

Regardless of what I think on the matter, I believe the NRA is too strong even for the POTUS to beat. But I guess we'll see.

I'd like to think that with some proper family and social supports the gunman's madness could have been prevented.

I understand this is a polarizing topic. I don't own a gun personally but I enjoy shooting them and enjoy the skill demonstrated by marksmen in contests. I am also an advocate of responsible hunting and gaming. If I was in a situation where an angry person was using a weapon to threaten or harm others, I'd like to think I'd have the presence of mind in the moment to act decisively to protect others. I'd also hope that I could disarm the attacker. Obviously my odds would be dramatically better if he's not using a firearm.

Here's the bottom line (and I'll stop posting about it)- I feel less and less safe in this world and the answer is not for people to buy more personal firearms. I can't protect everyone dear to me all the time no matter how many weapons I own. I'd like to be able to go the the mall or the movies without fearing if someone is going to kill me or my family. It's getting nuts and we are all nuts for allowing it. Ask Zblack if he feels 100% safe at the mall near his house now? What's the solution? More metal detectors and roving armed security and more concealed carry permits? It's all madness. What about those of us who don't want everyone around them carrying a weapon? Or am I just being unrealistic in wanting a more peaceful society?

I don't think you are, but the answer is going to be much more complicated and far reaching than just "guns". Maybe its just the American "society" now, maybe its diseased in some fashion. If that's true, who knows whats the cure for that disease then.

EDIT: personally, I think there are just too damn many of us around with deeply personal opinions (right or wrong) that can't be easily swayed through rational argument
