I give you health informatics my misc'ers http://ije.oxfordjournals.org/content/31/3/587.full.pdf
The rate of injury is higher in American Football than Rugby. Yes, it is a ration study. Yes, you do impact with more force in American Football. Yes, both sports are played by lunatics. (I stopped playing rugby at 18 with a broken jaw and three records of a broken nose, plus countless minor injuries not worth mentioning).
You'll find a similair comparison in medical studies between boxing and bare kunckled boxing. Bare knuckle looks more brutal but hurts on the hands more, so the force of punch is considerable lower than when wearing protective pads.
You have to think that the type impacts are very different as well. In boxing and American football you have more kinetic shock explaining concussion rate and low-term mental impairment (a whole other set of studies I have of anyone is interested).
Bizarrely, I only got into this area of health accidentally when I was dealing with rates of gorilla and elephant attacked on conservation workers. My initial research into elephant keepers rates it as one of the most dangerous occupations a person can have - v high morality and fatality rates inter rationally. But need some more time on that.

Never plated American football, looks alright but iv got no idea wtf is going on. Some guy gets pumped and taken out then his whole team goes nuts...
Rugby is pretty insane, both league and union, IMO union is so much harder. Been knocked out a couple of times, knees to the head in rucks, think iv broken my nose and alway draw blood in every game.
Got to be heaps fitter for rugby thougholympic lifter
