It's a everyday fare in this section, in every single noobs thread asking "what supplement should I take'", "what supps I need?", etc, the usual response from friendly and supposedly educated people is "dude, I'd say stick to the basics: protein, multi, fish oil, creatine". But what if the poor ignorant Opie already has a great diet, eating more than enough protein, a lot of oily fish and fruits and veggies? Are the multi, protein powder and fish oil caps still basics? It seems that this forum is full of clairvoyants. I mean, is this serious? Can we stop this ****, please?

No ****!...
Yeah, it's better to recommend a newbie protein and fish oil rather than glutamine and test-booster. My point is that you can't recommend someone supplements without knowing his/her diet and eating habits. People asking these questions are generally absolutely clueless, if you want to do them a favor, head them to the Nutrition section so they can educate themselves about basic nutrition and get an idea of what they really need according to their diet. There is no such thing as "basic supplements". What's basic for someone may be a waste for someone else.Fuack science! Show me what you can do under the bar. That's where it's at

There are stickies at the top of the page that people are supposed to have read before posting, at least once it is said that diet is more important than supplements but that being said this is the supplement section of the forums so the fact that people will always suggest supplements in the section devoted to discussion of them isn't unfathomable.

Pretty much covered. There's the 'American diet' thing, which is a joke, then there's the 'i'm a hardcore bb' thing, also a joke. If you're pounding chicken, tuna, egg whites, broc****, and yams, well.....those may be healthy, individually, but they don't make up a balanced diet.
I strongly believe everyone should take curcumin, green tea, and fish oil daily. Everyone.~ Roast Master, Resident Coffee Warlock~

What if I drink green tea daily? Love that stuff almost as much as I love my coffee.
BULLED is right though. In many thread regardless of diet or assumptions of such, people always throw out the big 4 and call it good. While I can appreciate that a lot of the time that may be accurate, telling a 150 lb guy or 120 lb gal that protein powder should be a staple is likely a stretch. It's hella easy to meet your macro via diet, which should be encouraged. And further, if their diet is trash or "american" (that made me chuckle) or "hardcore bb" (which is ridiculous and dated) who knows what could be beneficial.
I understand why this has become the go to answer, but I agree that it's probably too generic. This is akin to the thread from a couple of weeks ago regarding meal timing. Good advice popped over and over again becomes overly generic and partially incorrect as it gets passed on. Plus, there's the fact that this question gets asked daily and people are just looking for a simple answer to help opie and move on."I'm pretty sure your wrong, but care to elaborate..."

Even most regulars posting in the forum don't have enough variety in there diet to cover everything a multi would cover. I don't think we need to talk about how benefitial fish oil/EPA/DHA is nor how cheap creatine is to buy. Not everyone needs protein powder, but in a priority list, would you place things like a test booster or BCAA's above protein powder? I think it's just a matter of priority/best interest of what supplements you'd want to be taking before adding in others. Like a lot of us say in here, supplements aren't needed, but they help.
Progressive overload + progressive eating = gains. Simple as that!

When i first started lifting i wish i had come here and had someone tell me "just start with the basics." I would have saved a bunch of time and money. I still would have made chit gains lol, but at least i wouldn't have been blowing money on brick and mortar crap like an idiot.

Exactly right lol Bulled doesn't advocate supps, and that's cool. I see where he's coming from; supplements should SUPPLEMENT a diet. A good diet may not need supplementation of any kind. But most people do not have their diets in check, nor do they have much concept of what a good diet should consist of in any case.
That said, there should be more discussion with these folks instead of blindly going with the default recommendations. The issue is that it takes a special kind of person to absorb what they're being told and apply it. Most people just don't take advice, and most people will never do anything spectacular under the bar. So it can be tiresome going in circles with people, answering the same questions over and over, and consistently having the majority misinterpret and fail to understand. Just is what it is.Last edited by BenBlue; 06-30-2017 at 10:53 AM.

So true. When I started, I had Cybergenics and Joe Weider adverts making me throw my money at them. Even as I began to get more sophisticated (if you can call it that) the best resource at the time was the giant EAS advert book, The Sports Supplement Review by good ole Bill Phillips.

No, those guys (at least the vast majority) are teens who have no idea of nutrition, macros, supplementation, training and how this entire **** works. They are not looking to fill gaps in their diet. They have heard, read, have been told about supps and they have a misconception of supplements. I'm pretty sure 90% of the people who make these threads have no idea how much protein they consume daily, they may actually be overdoing protein (it's much easier than it seems), but if you tell them "dude, you should get a protein powder, it is a staple", they will buy it. So they are wasting time... and money.

These may have their benefits for general health, but in the concept of lifestyle, diet, and especially genetics, they (nor any supplement) won't do much of a difference, if any. To me no supplement is a basic, I actually don't take any supplement on a daily basis, not even creatine. Seeing 18-19 year old boys taking religiously a lot of pills and powders each and every day reminds me of my grandmother in her later years. Makes me sad, seriously.
I would recommend everyone eat a couple of garlic cloves daily, though. Mediterranean diet hereLast edited by BULLED; 06-30-2017 at 12:28 PM.

That would be a smart move. You can count on me for that cause.
You don't get the point at all, Meyer. No one complains about supplements. Leave aside the sections and sub-forums for a while. This is the largest online bb community. What does it matter where the thread is posted? So according to you the words "nutrition" and "diet" should be banned on this section? When a completely clueless newb comes in here asking for some magic supps to get huge and strong af, we all must say "dude, buy the basics and take them for life" without asking about his diet, macros, training program, cause (watch out!) this is the Supps section?
