I think we all know that the FDA has pretty ridiculous recommendations for overall health and losing weight. I was wondering what you guys think the disconnect is between the FDA and up to date science. Bodybuilders and fitness athletes everywhere have been using a lot of practices that the government doesn't seem to notice! We obviously aren't becoming a more healthy society as a whole! What's the disconnect!?

I wouldn't use the word ridiculous at all. There are essentially three things about government nutritional advice that I agree are not necessarily in the best interests of the public (in order of severity):
- The food industry has a strangle hold on government regulations.
- Recommended food choices tend to be those that are or are derived from subsidized commodities.
- There's a strong tendency to not only wait for up-to-date science, but also general consensus among scientists before changing recommendations.
The process of writing guidelines, taking comments from all parties each with mutually exclusive goals, then rewriting guidelines based on those comments certainly doesn't help.Science improves practice, practice advances science.
