srs question for some of you.. How have you dealt with trajedgy, radical life changes (not physically, but living & work situations) and lifting? I haven't stopped lifting but now I'm finding it hard to follow a program or template. the iron is my therapy but at times I feel like stepping away for a bit but then I have no clue what to do with myself, since lifting is how i've coped with **** for about 2 years now. I dont know, its crazy... Despite trajedies and whatnot, i've managed to hit PR's and keep leaning out.. I'd be dumb to put a hault to this progress. /end dear diary

I've always had a plan B in my head in case sh** gets crazy.
5/3/1 2x per week template. If I can't find 2 hours per week for myself, I don't really want to know how crappy my life would have to be at that point.

We're adults, and while some of us have more responsibilities than others, I think if you really are passionate about lifting you should make it a priority that ranks fairly high on your list.

Been there and it's not good and struggling to not be there now. Some times you have to set priorities and I will never regret putting my family first no mater how much it sucks.

Definitely. Peoples situations vary, and I always try to put family in need over lifting.
I've got a 4 year old step daughter that I pretty much raise since her mom is in school and works nights.
And I've got a baby on the way. So I know there will be a time pretty soon when training has to take a back seat, but even then I'm hoping to just simplify it and find the time to train a couple hours per week. Even if it means working through lunch breaks or losing an hour of sleep.

It's cliche but I think "where theres a will, theres a way". Especially with those of us who see the gym as a form of therapy. I'm a dick if I'm not training.

Funny thing is I'd put lifting in front of job or dog. I'd put the dog in front of job as well. I've learned over time a job is just not that important in the grand scheme of things of life and enjoying it.

The difference is that once I'm off work, I can go to the gym any time. But I can't take my dog to the dog park any time. So the first thing I do when I get off work at 5 is go home and feed him and take him to the dog park till it gets dark. Then I can bring him back home and get myself ready for the gym.

Well I moved out here and signed a 6 month lease, so I need to keep my job to pay for it and make some money. So getting here on time and whatnot is basically the most important thing. Once again, I can plan my lifting around work and my dog so it becomes a lower priority. But only having 3 real priorities makes lifting still a pretty important thing.

Without a job to make money I wouldn't be able to have a gym membership or a dog and would probably be miserable.

    I'm "young" haha
    just turned 25 last week.

I'm not saying any of it is bad. There are just times when I know lifting has to take a back seat. my dog and lifting both rank above my job currently

job is obviously important, but I don't invest extra time in it because it's just not a huge priority right now. I don't get paid enough to care, and I can't job hunt right now when I've gotta take off a week of work in January when the baby gets here.

Oh yea, I don't invest extra time either. Once I get off, I don't think about work at all. And right now I'm temporary and would get time and a half for overtime but I don't really wanna work any more than I have to even if it means more money. If I become permanent though you get a set salary regardless of how many hours you work, so I'm sure they'll make me stay later than 5 when projects gotta get done which will mess with lifting which will suck.

I hear you. You took it more the time schedule route, whcih, is applicable but I'm talking more of... I love lifting but trajedy strikes and it tests my will.... I barely want to go, or think about it.. but I know I love it. Normally when I step into the gym it's my therapy.. but sometimes lately I'll hit a few warm up sets and bout to start worksets and, I lsoe it and just walk out. I dont know how to explain it, guess just seeking someone to share how they dealt with trajedy and kept lifting through it. appreciate the view points though.

I guess you like your dog more then I like mine. That little free loading bastard has a doggie door and bowl of food most days. He's lucky if I come home let come alone stop by and take his dumb ass for a walk.

What's the point of a dog if you don't like him or enjoy spending time with him? I enjoy taking my dog to the park and being outside and talking to other dog owners. Plus I have an apartment so its not like he has freedom to go in a back yard and run around and pee and stuff. He probably lays on my bed from 7am to 5pm waiting for me to come home to take him out so he can run around.

If it makes you happy sure. Life's perspective changes when you lose 99% of everything to a natural disaster, almost lose your wife twice due to some health complications, deal with a crying baby 24/7 for almost 2 years (yes literally), and have another child to just find out there's a potential of losing her too due to more health issues. Since 2008 my life has been turned upside down man. A job, the least of my worries or concerns. I can always get a job and make money.

its not about how much money you have, its about enjoying every minute of it

that being said, more money = more options

its important, and its not important
The muscles i value most are the ones directly surrounding the spine, the hips, the scapula, the femur and the tibia... in that order.

Basically the whole body minus chest and biceps... pretty much the opposite of what your local gym looks like on a typical Monday.

I guess it depends on the person. My dad left Iran in the 80s to get away from the craziness and come to the US, my brother had an ear infection when he was a baby that the doctors said he had a very slim chance of surviving or not having a mental handicap but he turned out fine. And my dad had to go through Hurricane Andrew, one of Miami's worst natural disasters with two little kids and we ended up not having power for weeks and his work van got crushed by a tree. And yet all he still has thought about for the past 30 years was to work as much as possible to make as much money as possible to leave for my brother and me. We would go on family vacations to disney world and stuff when my brother and I were kids but that was like 15 years ago. My dad has not actually been on a vacation that wasn't for my brother and me.

Yea that's what I'm figuring out. Right now I work 44 hours one week and 36 hours the other. If they said we'll give you $50k more to work 30 more hours a week, I probably wouldn't do it. Because what would be the point of having that money if I'm working 70 hours a week and have no time to enjoy it. That is why I'm not only trying to find a job I enjoy, but also a job that pays the most money while working the least amount of time.

Same with my parents and I don't like it though. I don't know what they are doing with their money and don't care. Wish they would spend it on themselves and take vacation. My parents started a business over 30 years ago and have worked 7 days a week since then taking vacations practically only when someone dies and they go to a funeral or weddings. I never understood that and never will and I really hope it is what they enjoy and they are happy.

Yea I don't like it either. I keep telling my dad to retire or go on vacation but he says there is too much things to pay for. Plus he says he would have nothing to do if he was retired. He is one of those people that enjoys work and not much else. He doesn't watch TV or movies or sports so without work all that would really be left would be remodeling the house and my mom annoying him lol. But that is part of why I took this job, to take a huge weight off his shoulders. Once my brother is done with grad school and gets a job, that should take another huge weight off his shoulders as well. Then hopefully he can start figuring out if he has enough money to retire and actually enjoy life alittle.

I got stuck with an ******* dog. He's destructive, stupid and annoyingly happy! I hate that dog but he refuses to run away and I can't give him away. I've tried like 3 times and people keep bringing him back... causes he's bad! And he's gay! That dog is so embarrassing it's not even funny.

So why don't you train him? And what kind of dog is he? I'll take him off your hands.

I've tried to train him. I've even taken him to dog schools, even a specialist. Apparently the dog has separation anxiety and abandonment issues. He's been traumatized. His first owner dies when he was puppy and it was along before anyone found him or the owner. His second owner died with in weeks of getting him and died in the house with him. I've had him 3 years and not his behavior hasn't improved at all. Right now he's staying with trainers that work with dogs like him, but I don't see them getting anywhere.

    Some kind of Pomeranian.
