And why would it have anything to do with the Mayan calendar ending on the 21st and starting over again on the 22nd? Brb Gregorian calendar ends on the 31st of December, that means bad sh!t is going to go down starting on the 27th.

What has happened other than the elementary school thing?
There have been other mass shootings, like 4 or 5 in the last 6-9 months but Newport in and of itself is enough. If and when you become a parent you will realize the absurdity of that statement.
That said the thinking of I'm not going outside is too damn close to "the fiscal cliff is coming so I should stockpile semi-automatic weapons despite the 20 year old with severe mental illness who is prone to violent outbursts in my house" for my taste. I don't like to speak ill of the dead but that mother played a fairly major role in this tragedy by "being protective" of her kid to the point of keeping him from getting the help he needed AND having lots of weapons in her house, because ya know if the stock market crashes you're gonna need assault rifles and ****. It sounds like she was a little paranoid schizo herself and the father and older brother abandoned them to be crazy together and just paid them off while they moved to New York. The whole thing is heartbreaking as a parent and a human being. It's not "**** going down" or any other catchphrase somebody wants to give it. It's a tragedy of epic porportions and should be shown the deference it deserves.

the only thing I'm scared of is long lines at Wal-Mart when I make the inevitable trip there on December 23rd because I forgot to buy something for one of my familiy members.
What happened Friday was a terrible tragedy, but living in fear is never the answer. Having kids myself, it was pretty heartbreaking to see what happened. I have a little girl in preschool, so it hit me pretty hard, but she's at school today and our lives will continue. You can't constantly worry about isolated incidents and assume they're going to happen in your community. I live 20 minutes from Blacksburg and never felt unsafe in my community. Being cautious is one thing but dont' overdo it. . Did you hang out inside the remainder of 2001?
