6.5km/4 miles in 35 mins - good, bad or average ?

I'm, guessing it's better than the average slob but pretty poor compared to someone who actually trains to run?

also finding that running is more fun than lifting weights in some dark room with a bunch of grunting idiots (no hate/not meaning to generalise, just how my gym is)

so anyway for others that run/jog whether it be for fun or to drop weight or anything, how do i stack up in comparison?

Quite honestly, if you can run 4 miles w/o puking or having a heart attack you are better than most of population. Having said that I don't think that is a real fast time. I plugged it into a pace calculator online and it said 8:45 mile. I usually average 10 or 11 minute miles when I run around my neighborhood. BUT, I don't run very often AND my neighborhood is all hills. So, I honestly don't know if my times mean much to you. I swear its uphill in all directions out, and then back to my house. Lately I've been doing sprints instead of straight jogging. As for you, you're faster than me, but all you can do is track your times and keep getting better against yourself.

it's a sad fact but you're probably right here.

I also used to average 10 or 11 mins a mile when i used the treadmill at the gym but jogging seems to give me better times though im not sure i'm running faster - maybe just random bursts of pace as opposed to a constant medium.

I really got lazy on cardio over the last 5 or 6 months. I just strained my right high ham / glute playing a friendly game of softball. It was pathetic. Hence me putting sprints back in, and me adding regular cardio back to my weekly routine.

Probably about average when you only include people that can actually do it. My pace for RECOVERY runs is usually maximum 7.5 min/mile though, and I'm by no means a runner, so I'd personally be extremely disappointed in that time for anything less than about 5 miles.

Its ok, its pretty darn slow if you are going non stop without walking however. Without much effort and not a lot of training i could do 20 mins and some change under 21 with a 5k, slightly slower on a longer run.
Lift for a better physique (calories aside) and run for cardiovascular health.
If you want to get faster, run slower, and dont stop, eventually you will get a faster pace.
There is always someone less fortunate, with real hunger, with real adversity, who made something of themselves. What is your excuse?

For your weekend huffer that's pretty good. I say if you can keep up a sub 10 minute mile for more than 3 miles you are in better shape than 90% of Americans.

I was really big into running last year. Would run 13 miles just for fun, every saturday. Really hard to keep muscle that way. But it is very enjoyable.

Keep it up, sounds like you are doing great.

I'm guessing from what I notice in my area that speed is average to slightly above average. I run anywhere between 4 and 10 miles at a pace of 6.5 to 7.5 miles an hour depending on terrain, temperature, wind, and the actual distance. I'm also closer to 49 then I am 48.

This thread just shattered me. I was so freaking happy that i did a mile in 12 minutes today i almost shed a tear. I ended up doing 2 miles in 30 minutes...lots of walking on 2nd mile.....no wind, cramps and serious amounts of sweat pooring off me....guess im just a regular slob, but not for to much longer

Don't let it get to you. I started running in March and I think it was the end of April that I put in my longest effort to that date. Four miles in an hour and fifteen minutes. I felt good about it, considering I wouldn't have even thought of running three months prior to that. Stick with it and your speed and endurance will increase. The faster you are running the more calories you are burning and the better your blood flow too.

Stick at it, mix up pace and distance. You will get quicker. Keep a log.

    I did 11k thismorning 61min. Is that fast - who gives a fook. I couldn't run 200 yards a year ago 😜

Only compare yourself to you. I know I suck at running, but I always time my route and compare it to the last time. It's like I'm racing myself.

Also, would you have even considered running 2 miles when you were 275? (Yeah, I hit up your profile. Keep up the good work!)

This is a great attitude. I usually average about 10-12 mins/mile. A few years ago, I could do about 7-8 mins/mile (and do 10 miles at a stretch). Not anymore, though. I'd like to build my endurance back up there - my current self will lose to my past self, but I'm hoping my future self will be better than any of them.

Just keep at it, it's gradual but you'll get there.

I can run 1.5miles (2.4km) in around 08.30. I'm tired as hell at the end of it but I do it purely as an assessment to see where i'm at

i go about 6 k's in 30 ish minutes. I only run once a week now though (used to do it 3-4 times a week, for 10 k's at a time) as im trying to build more muscle.. i didnt find it too difficult to increase my pace/distance when i was really focussing on running. I was doing 10 k's in about 45-50 mins within a few months of not being able to even GO 8k's... And yeah proper technique and breathing helped HEAPS! especially in injury prevention. No more sore joints, just sore muscles.

but really screw all the bs. just chuck your headphones in and enjoy the experience dont stress about any of the other crap

I guess it depends on a couple of factors, age and weight.
Also, if your like me I run 4 miles on a treadmill but interval training.

I have an LCD display with a 400 meter running track on the treadmill.

    Male
    46
    13.6
    4 miles
    40 mins
Walk 100 meters, jog at 50% for 200 meters then run like your being chased by Freddie Krugger for 100 meters. Do this for four miles.

    Cool Better than most

Look mate, if I was you I'd look on YouTube and do scoobys boot camp training. I think it's really good to improve your push up, pull up and running endurance. I did it and I couldn't run for 5 minuets and now I'm doing 40 min endurance run and it's good to do. This is what I use: Monday Wednesday and Friday running, cycling/ cross training and weights on Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays and either rest Sunday or go for a walk but this is the program I use and I've lost a lot of weight improved my mile time from 20 mins ( proves how bad I am at only 16) and now I'm crushing 8 mins to 7 mins a mile but just go for it and you'll be better than most people.

I once ran 6 miles faster than that including stopping half way for a pint. About 50lbs heavier now and don't do cardio, you'd kick my ass today.

Lift for a better physique (calories aside) and run for cardiovascular health.
If you want to get faster, run slower, and dont stop, eventually you will get a faster pace.
how is that slow? you're saying you can maintain a 7 min mile without alot of training/effort? assuming with extensive training you'd be able to do a 4-5 min maintaince mile lol? go to the olympics then lul

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i did football/track in highschool/college OP my fastest time on a mile was a 4:43 i honestly never did more than a mile at a time since i was doing mostly explosive workouts i aimed to increase my 40 yard rather than my sustained running capability...but... comeon maintaining a 5 min mile for 20 mins is hard...even getting a 5 min mile is hard as fck...thats the type of run you feel like you're gonna puke as soon as you stop...or the type of run where you talk to yourself like "fck only a little bit more til im fcking done forever!"

unless you're a super long distance ethiopian runner or some **** maintaining a 5 min mile is pretty hard the worlds best marathon runners maintain a 5 min mile throughout the marathon finishing with world records with slightly above 2hr times...which is ridiculous imo

OP imo if you can even do 4 miles thats good, maintaining sub 10 mins multiple mile runs is very good don't let everyone here demotivate you...pro's trained specifically for running maintain a 5 min mile anyone even those here saying they can get remotely near that level of maintenance run is BS'ing .... typical person full blasted running is = to a 5 min mile...maintaining that for more than 2 miles isn't normal for most ppl; outside of people who train specifically for it day in and day out...the world record for a 5k is like 12:30...so thats like a slightly above a 4 min mile...and this is from people whose career it is to run...the top of the top....the genetically gifted runners...are *maintaining* a 4-5 min mile in these endurance runs...or sprints in their case...

OP if you want to increase your endurance/speed do what my track/cross country coach forced us to do...rugged mountain runs and beach runs and/or deep stair runs (check culver city stairs for an example of deep stair runs)...literally torture every time you do any of them...but you WILL def increase your times if you practice on those type of terrains then move back to normal terrain.

pro's specifically trained for running typically run a 4-5min mile long or short(not including that crazy 3 min mile world record......) you're running about an 8 min mile...maybe you can hit around 6-7 min mile if you did a 5k instead of what you did...either way you're in very good shape...keep it up man! if you're more egocentric just do a mile run and full blast sprint it and maybe you can hit those sub 6 mins

    Hi Everyone,

I am posting from the UK and just found this forum. I started 'excercising' for fun about 4 years ago. I worked in a high powered mental job teaching, so needed to get active. NEVER ran in my life, so tried a treadmill. For ages I built up to running a slow mile ) 14 mins. I kept at it. I then did a 5K run ( 34 mins), I then kept at it and built up to 10K training. Takes me about 1Hr 10mins. I don't give a fig what other people think. I warm up and cool down properly. My Dr says I am Ok to do it. Once I start running I do the full distances non stop. I am 61 this year....Just go and ENJOY IT!!!!

7 mins miles for 5k is slow (a bit under 22 mins). It is like benching 150lbs. And yes I am aware of how few people can do it. That is just a sign of how poor most peoples conditioning is. 14 year old freshman show up and run that fast on the first day of XC. And no dropping 3 mins/mile ( you need to run about 4:10 pace to be an olympic level 5k runner) isn't something that happens with extensive training. Those guys start by running sub 17 min 5ks as 14 years olds rolling out of bed

Obviously scale the numbers if your a chick or over 45.

Distance running is one of those things where you need a basic level of fitness but once you get it you can really crank up the distance (not necessarily the pace) easily. Coming back from an injury, running 3 miles at 9 min pace was always harder than running 6:30 pace for 12 in about 16 weeks when the body had adapted.
