Yesterday I went to my grandsons graduation. His uncle, (my son's wife's brother) was there. He is 26, he and I both wore an affliction shirt (of course I looked better than him) and he turns to me and says John how can I get big arms? I have been going to the gym for 2 years now and my arms still look the same.
So I ask him, what is he eating, how is his training, what supps has he been taking etc etc and you would not believe the amount of curls this man does!
On top of that he doesn't do ANY, not one compound movement for legs or back, none!
His primary schedule is based on arms and chest.
Now I am not going to front, he has gotten bigger since the last time I saw him, so training arms and chest has helped him, but he just doesn't have that "overall look"
OK so what did I tell him?
I laid out a plan for him on more compound movements, with some isolation stuff and I explained to him about the importance of nutrition and supplementation.
What was his response you ask?
I don't want to get my legs big, I can't see my back therefor don't care about my back, I am not eating that much, but I can do the supps.
He took the isolation exercises I gave him and the supps I told him to take and threw the rest of the information I gave him right out the window....
A wasted 45 minutes to an hour of my advice
My response after that?
That is why you will always look like sh!t you dumb f'ck!

Good advice. Baffling that people don't see the correlation between their foundation (legs), and upper body strength.
You could always tell him to try this as a quick fix, and proceed to laugh at him.

I have decided that 99% of the people out there don't love this stuff like we do and it will be a passing fad like Oakley sunglasses, boogie boarding, cargo shorts, ect. Why even bother ?

I hate people that are like this. Say he continues with his chest and arm workout for a solid 5 years, imagine how ridiculously out of proportion he is going to look.

John, it sounds like you set him up with one of those boring old "compound" based programs. Don't worry, when he grows up, he will realize (as most of us do) that the compounds grow the body better than anything else.

I am just at 18" fatties....most of the real progress came from a variety of Barbell / Cable Rows and Pullups. Close Grip Press work and Heavy Overhead Pressing for tris.
I still finish out with curls and press downs now and again, but the real mass builders continue to be rows and presses.

I never see my back either. one day, I looked in the mirrors at the gym, after a few years of lifting, and was thinking "Damn, that dude's back is BIG". Then I realize I was looking at my own back. LMAO!! It fooled me at first, but I think it was a relfection of something like 3-4 mirrors bouncing my reflection back and forth.
I love the idea that if someone is standing behind me, I still look big to them. It's a good feeling knowing whichever angle someone looks at me from, I look like I lift.
