What sport requires the fastest reaction time?

I was asked this question today.

I came up with hockey goalie, Baseball hitters, Drag racing (if you think it's a sport)

What would you say? What is the fastest reaction time in sports?

I believe a baseball hitter has .35 seconds to see ball released, determine pitch, determine if it's a strike, then start his swing.

Pretty impressive if you ask me.

    IMO, drag racing.

Your reaction time off the line determines who wins. Once the cars are moving, the race is over. 99.9999% of the time, the guy who gets off the line first, even by an inch, will win.

+Its not something you can drill for hours on end in-car.

other sports: Hockey/ Baseball, you can drill hitting and catching and etc. for hours and hours till its second nature.

Some events in Athletics (aka Track and Field) such as 100m, 200m et al.

Edit: Maybe not the fastest but reaction time is pretty darn important.

Drag racing, most races are decieded by .1 second or so unless one of the cars breaks down or spins out. 0.04-0.05 seconds is average reaction time for a drag racing driver. So basically half of what determinew if you win is how you react in drag racing.

and picture how bad theyd be if they didnt get to hit 100 balls at practice everyday.

Drag racers might get 10 tries off the line in training, if that.

Baseball hitter for sure. Which is why you are a hall of famer if you managed to not fail more than 70% of the time.

Hockey goalie is definitely up there as with returning serves in tennis and playing cornerback in the nfl

yeah but going from yellow to green never changes and you can almost predict it with enough practice. i might be wrong. but i know a friend of mine had one set up to practice.

You also have the light tree to time your start. If the lights flashed randomly and in an unpredictable direction RTs would be much higher.

    Boxing.

In his prime, Muhammad Ali's punch took just 4/100th of a second to make contact. The average boxer at that time and today can punch anywhere between 15/100th to 25/100th of a second...and some heavyweights take 4/10ths of a second from zero to contact.

You gotta have real quick reflexes to dodge that.

F1. Red to "green" time changes at the start, so you can't train your reaction time for the sequence, and the racing's intense.

fatality rates are higher in boxing than racing. Not sure about NASCAR but there hasn't been an F1 death in like 20 years. Considering their mileage you have a better change of being killed by a drunk driver on your way to mcdonalds.
