How much of gains is hard&heavy, how much is specific routine?

What amount of progress and gains comes from generally lifting hard and heavy, compared to how much from your specific routine? If you stick with free weights and compounds, and do those well, is that generally the important part and that your specific routine and variations will only have a small role?

It's a lot more than just routine.. you have to factor in diet (which is HUGE, probably even more important than a workout routine IMO) and rest.

The most important parts of a routine are frequency, exercise selection and progressive overload.
