    Question Rib Tattoo Pain scale

I've been debating getting tattoo on my ribs for a while now (almost 2 yrs). I think I'm ready to bite the bullet.

So for the people that have em, On a scale of 1 - 10. How was the pain?
It will be lettering about 4 inches wide and 12 inches long, running up from my obliques to my ribs.

    I may wimp out!

If you want it, get it. Don't worry about the pain. A good tattoo artist doesn't inflict much pain the days. I had one done on the inside of my wrist. Yeah it hurt some. So?

    Don't be a wimp.

    What did you get?

I have one already in between my shoulder blades. It mainly hurt when he was on my spine. I expect the pain to be simular to that. I just don't know if I can stand 2hours of it.

I had one done on my spine recently, not that painful just resonated through my body since the area had no padding. But it was only for less than a 1/2 hour. I would take a couple of Aleve right before, make sure you're hydrated and get a good night of sleep the night before the appointment. Get as comfy as possible once you're there and take breaks if you have to.

Comparing a wrist tattoo to a rib tat is not even possible. Op-if this is your first tattoo there is nothing really to prepare you for for it as you haven't had a tattoo to fully understand what's involved.

Fwiw rib tats hurt a lot but once they start you kind of have to just lay there and Take it. It's kind of reminds me of bdsm

It might be in line with the dog humping your leg, sometimes you have to let him finish....

If this is your first tat, you may want to get something smaller first (of course in the same appt...) so you know what to expect. A great excuse to get MORE INK!

So where is the "least" painful area? dont you get a topical numbing creme or something? After i read a few threads on tats it occurred to me that I could do disguise my scar on my right abs, wonder how much that will hurt?

Very true. This of course may not be universal true, but most definitely is something the uninitiated would never understand.

All of the tattoo artists I know won't do any work on you if you want numbing cream. You need to experience the little bit of pain with it. I have about 8 hours worth of work on my left arm and it wasn't bad except for the elobow and collarbone.

To answer your question everyone I talk to says the least painful place to get one is on your upper arm.

I could never get a tatoo anywhere on my torso. Well I COULd but I'm so freakin hairy why bother? It would be like putting a tile mosaic down on your floor then covering it up with a shag carpet.

To answer your question everyone I talk to says the least painful place to get one is on your upper arm.
Never heard of the numbing cream.... would never consider it either. I've had upper arm tattoos that were okay and some that hurt worse than others. Outer forearm and above the ankle level is not bad at all. Parts of my chest were white-hot pain though.

I saw this lady getting a ladybug tattoo high up on her foot... you'd think she was having a limb amputated and the artist was not happy to see that 10 minute tattoo get done in a 1/2 hour.

I have 2 arms with full sleeves and my back piece. Pain is expected. I've heard the ribs are bad but really 2 hours is nothing, I usually did 3-4hrs at a time for my arms after a while you just go numb anyways. My artist swears by the numbing cream they use but I've never cared to try it. I hear it works great until the first swipe and then your just back to regular anyways. There will be spots that hurt really bad and others that feel not too bad. Suck it up if you really want the tat.

There is a tautness to skin/muscle that naturally Occurs when pain is applied. Add numbing creme and some of that is lost. Means that thr artist has to stretch the skin more which can lead to crappy line work and bad art or at least that's what my husband (tattoo artist, rip) said.

Just got a piece done on my ribs about 2 weeks ago. Overall dimensions are 4in wide by 7 in tall. It lays under when my arm falls on my side, half on my ribs half on my lat. The half done on the ribs hurt considerably more than the half on the lats, due to lack of padding. Also, the closer it got the the armpit or nipple (still not too close, but close enough to hit all of those nerves) the more intense the pain was.

Mine was about a 2 hr sitting. Took a break about eery 30 mins to breathe, drink water, and recompose myself. First hour wasn't too bad. Second hour was miserable. Any longer and I would have had to break in into multiple sessions, I was at my breaking point at the end of it.

For reference I also have a large chest piece (banner) which was a 4 hr sitting- and the rib piece was much more painful.

As someone earlier said though, the pain is part of earning the ink, so just zone out and tough your way through it.
Mine was dedicated to my mother. I just kept reminding myself if she put up with 20+ years of my crap I could put up with 2 hours of pain in her name.

Good luck, hope it comes out better than you hope for.

3-4 hours is a long time to spend in the chair in one shot. My artist breaks it up into the outline/shading and color in 2 sessions on big pieces. Weird how one little spot can feel like a jackhammer and a little distance away it is more tolerable. I have considered chewing on my shoe at those bad moments.

I saw my son sit 3 hours on a shin tattoo... he said it wasn't bad. Gotta give him credit.

that makes sense....I do have a high pain tolerance, no novacain when I need fillings, etc. however, the most I have ever endured is the pain of having an infected cuticle punctured and pus squeezed out by a doctor....indescribable.

I gotta agree here^^^ I just had some work done on my right pec and up to my collar bone. I thought it would hurt around the collar bone due to being less padded, but it really didn't hurt there. It did hurt some near my armpit.

This last one was 2 hours the first appt. but it's not done. I go back June 19th to finish. Another 2 hours. The most I ever sat for at one time was 5.5 hrs. That kinda sucked. lol I had to take a break after about 4 hrs, but so did the artist so I didn't feel too bad. Haha

Sorry I just now saw this. My husband died. I'm not sure whether a scar can be covered over as the skin there is different, but I'm sure a good artist can come up with a design wherein they would work with your scar to incorporate it into a design to help camouflage it.
