We Legal NowThe White House will halt the deportation of as many as 800,000 young illegal immigrants and in some cases give them work permits, in a sweeping new initiative announced by the Department of Homeland Security.
People under 30 who entered the country illegaly or overstayed their visas when they were under the age of 16 will be immune from deportation if they have not committed a significant misdemeanor or felony and have graduated from a U.S. high school or joined the military. They can apply for a renewable two-year work permit that won't provide a path to citizenship but will allow them to work legally in the country.
"Our nation's immigration laws must be enforced in a firm and sensible manner," Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement. "But they are not designed to be blindly enforced without consideration given to the individual circumstances of each case. Nor are they designed to remove productive young people to countries where they may not have lived or even speak the language. Discretion, which is used in so many other areas, is especially justified here."
President Obama will address the change in a speech at 1:15 pm.
Young people who were brought into the country illegally or overstayed their visas as children are commonly referred to as "Dreamers," referencing the title of a decade-old bill that would have given them legal status if they joined the military or attended college. The Dream Act passed the House nearly two years ago, but was blocked by Republicans in the Senate. Opponents of the bill have argued that it would encourage more people to enter the country illegally, while supporters say it helps people who were brought up as Americans and whose lack of status is not their own fault become full members of society.
President Obama has faced criticism from the crucial Hispanic electorate for ramping up deportations under his tenure and for failing to deliver on his campaign promise to pass comprehensive immigration reform within his first year in office. Several times in the past year, Obama has told Hispanic audiences who asked him why he did not issue an executive order halting deportations of some classes of immigrants that such a move would be legally impossible. It's unclear what made him change his mind.
"We've been hearing all sorts of things from the White House, that it's not legally possible, that it's not politically possible," said Erika Andiola, a 25-year-old Arizona-based Dreamer and advocate who has met with administration officials on the subject. "I can't even believe it. We've been working for this for so long."
The move may generate enthusiasm among many Latinos: 85 percent of registered Latino voters said in a Latino Decisions poll that they support the Dream Act. The president enjoys a strong lead among Hispanic voters over Mitt Romney, but a lack of enthusiasm among these voters could mean they stay home on Election Day in swing states like Nevada, Colorado and Florida. During the primary, Mitt Romney said he would veto the Dream Act, but in recent weeks he has seen open to a proposal by Sen. Marco Rubio to grant Dreamers a worker permit but not a path to citizenship.

Meh. I have only one big problem with this - it's a slap in the face to the people who have tried to go the legal route. They have put a lot of hassle and money into the normal legal process. In addition, the US should make the naturalization process currently in place easier overall for legal immigration. I'm glad to see there's the provision that they cannot have committed a high level misdemeanor or felony, as that's very important. I've changed my mind on this issue over the last few years. I used to be strongly against illegal immigration. Now, meh.

On the other hand, we could save a lot of money if we didn't have Congress, that would definitely cut into the deficit if everything was simply done through executive fiat. No more worry about passing laws that would simply be ignored or not enforced.

A simple way of translating this is "Hey, if you're under 30, go find your nearest document forger, come up with a semi-convincing 5 year paper trail/narrative and then come and enjoy America with no money down!"

you guys realize they arent all drug pushing mexicans though right?
some of those 800,000 want to be here more than lazy fuks born here who will just abuse the system. a good portion will be productive members of society and some even doctors/engineers/business owners
the problem isnt the mexicans, thats what the media wants you to fight over. the problem is the openness of the border, but they dont want you talking about that because theres nothing to argue over. everyone will say, yes the borders should be secured. except obama that is. he enjoys more illegals voting for him so he wants them as open as possibleEveryone betrays everyone

It doesn't make a difference if they are all priests, they are federal felons as soon as their foot touches u.s. soil. There is a process to go through, it doesnt matter if they don't like the process or if its not fast enough for them..its the process. It doesn't matter if they can't afford the process, thats the cost. Nobody has an ineherent right to be given access to this or any other country, and you don't get to sidestep the laws just because they don't fit your particular schedule.
These people are criminals..plain and simple. They should be deported immediately and charged with a federal level felony.

what good does that do anyone? put your emotions aside and look at it logically
tax money was spent to educate these people. a lot of tax money
more tax money would be spent to imprison them.
so lets say we already paid, $20,000 per illegal high school student. does it make sense to pay another $50k imprisoning them? or to legalize them and add to our work force AND consumer base, and lower crime
its not all black and white, what if the kid was brought here at age 1. how would it make sense to put someone in jail then?
like i said, the problem isnt the people, thats the media making an argument and giving you someone to hate. its the openness of the borderEveryone betrays everyone

logically we have 10% unemployment. Logically we have actual legal U.S. citizens that can't afford college. Logically these people are breaking federal law by their very presence in our country. Thats all the logic you need.
tax money was spent to educate these people. a lot of tax money
more tax money would be spent to imprison them.

Thats like saying 'the problem isn't the cockroaches in the house..its the lack of pesticide outside that allowed them in' Well, you still have cockroaches in your house you need to get rid of because 'closing the barn door after the horse got out' isn't really all that effective of a solution.
It comes down to this. There is no physical difference from wherever they come from and here. The same sun shines on the same dirt. The same wind blows across the land, the same water comes from the earth. The difference is the people. If you bring those people up here in mass amounts...you know what you have? The same sh*thole they are trying to get away from.
This isn't their home and they should try working on whatever armpit they come from instead of coming up here to sh*t up this place just as bad as the place they are leaving
