Career change at 33, with a wife and kid?

sup bros. i'm 33, i just got married (tomorrow will be our one-month anniversary) and we have a kid. I work in the IT field and have been for over 16 years. My dilemma is that I have been doing this for so long, I'm currently at the top of where I can go without furthering my education (certifications, degree, etc).

So, I started studying for my certs. MS Exchange MCITP Enterprise, Network+, then onto CCNA, CNA, and VCP. I have found myself bored out of my mind studying for this crap. I am no longer interested in IT it seems. I find it boring, I sit at a desk all day on the computer, usually with nothing to do because our network is usually up and running smoothly. Sometimes I will take on the occasional project, but that is fairly rare.

I think I want to get into Chemistry or become a DVM (veterinarian). So I have been looking into Biology and Chem degrees and then maybe moving on the veterinary school for vet medicine.

Should I make a major career change like this so late in the game of life? Or should I just continue on my path I'm currently on? I feel that I would be so much happier working with animals or chemistry/toxicology.

What do you guys think? Any advice, preferably from the older members that won't say stupid **** like "ur gay" or "that's funny, same thing happened to me today, I'm 33, I just..."

You should be on $150k+ with all that experience, would be crazy to leave.

    Vet sounds good though.

33 isn't too old to make a career change. It may be difficult for you and your family but it's possible. You won't be the first, or oldest, to do this.

but on a srs note, the process of getting into medical/dental/vet school is long and very difficult, especially now that you're 33 its going to take what like 7-8 years to get through it? and thats provided you get in without any problems (vet school is obviously very tough, many don't even get in)... are you earning good money now? gotta think about supporting family and stuff too... if you were in your late 20s and unmarried/no kids id say do it but it seems a little late but hey..

3 of us around age 33 got out of the Army after being officers. i switched to engineering (i had the degree, no experience.) Another went to law school, another to med school. Everything is going well. You will obviously need to have some liquid cash and way to support your family in the meantime, but with IT experience you should be able to get a part time job fixing computers or other IT related stuff, telecommmuting, etc, no?

    how old is your kid

surely your feelings are irrelevant now and should just work to finance children

You are not too old. I know plenty of people who started studying in their 30s.

However, not sure about wife and kids. can you afford to go back to school again?

+1 to making sure you have plenty of back up money, and your house in shape. You should go after what makes you happy especially if where you are at makes you feel dull.

Does your wife work and can you financially afford to make a career change without piling up a ton of debt, while still helping to provide a comfortable life for your family. Now that you have a wife and kid you have to put them before you, which may mean working a job you don't necessarily love to put food on the table.

33 is definitely not too old to make a transition, But honestly, most jobs suck and you'll probably be bored with that one after doing it for over 16 years. How many different companies have you worked for? You might just need to find a new place to work dealing with some new people and new things.

If you want it, go for it. Only have 1 life. Don't leave any "wish I would haves".

that being said, being a vet is really competitive. lots of the best students don't even make it into vet schools because the classes are small. if it's something you REALLY must do, then go for it, but if there are other options that you might enjoy just as much, you might want to go for them because they'll likely be safer options.

I like your ambition but to become a Vet is really hard. You need a bachelors degree then get accepted into vet school which is harder than med school to get into. If you think studying for these certs are hard think about all the BS classed you'll have to take in any degree you study if you go back. My suggestion would be to stick it out in your current situation and make the best of it or go to school at night to study something else.

interesting. Ive been interested in IT security for sometime now and actually thought about making it as a career.

However when I really took some time to sit down and think about it. I thought that it would be rather boring studying for something like that just to get a job sitting at a computer all day, for hours on end.

Although Im interested in that kinda stuff, it doesnt really extend no further then just being a hobby for me I think.

Ive heard of a guy who was 40 with a family and 2 kids going back to school to change careers once he got laid off from the car plant.

Schools and community colleges especially are FILLED with people of all ages. Im talking about people well off into their 40's and 50's taking classes. Srs.

Do what your mind tells you to do and follow your heart brah. You'll always have your IT experience to fall back on as a safety net.

Best of luck to you man.

As everyone said, Being a vet is tough. But you can change to other careers at that age. My dad was a teacher and had a wife, me and my sister and became a firefighter. It's doable at your age, but the window ha probably closed for medicine.

OP, yes - everyone i will tell you its never to late to change and it's fine but is this what you really want to do?

From what you said, it doesnt sound like you are challenged where you at. Given i am in the same space - IT, i can tell you there is a lot to learn if you dealing with complex network environment & troubleshooting etc.

Not too late OP, you'll probably be working another 25-30 years at least and you don't want to do that doing something you hate. Especially a field like IT which is going to change constantly in the next couple decades and you will have to go back to school for. Like the above said, getting an MBA would be a great idea because you'd only need 2-3 years of school and already have plenty of experience.

There is nothing that says you can't change careers at any time in your life. Don't be paralyzed by fear.

There's an incredible book you should check out. It's called "48 Days To The Work You Love". Changed my views on work, jobs, and education.

How old is your kid and do you plan on having anymore? Reason I ask is because priority #1 has to be your family. After your kid is out of the house and that expense is gone you'll have more financial flexibility to switch careers. Of course, you'll probably be 50 something and then would be cutting into your retirement funds.

op your post is kind of eerie to me. I have a friend that is in IT, and he handles when the system crashes etc.. we just had the discussion yesterday, that he doesn't have any degrees so he's hitting glass ceilings. hes getting certs too though. I asked him, "do you like what you do" and he said no. He really doesn't like IT just like you.

He wants to be a trainer, and he is even talking about coming to my company to be a department analyst.

I will say this. you are 33 years old. You do have a child to worry about, so play the conservative path. However, if you do want to do other things (change your field) practice makes perfect, and hands on experience is priceless. You can't devote the majority of your time to being in your IT position, and think you still can jump into another role without spending some hands on time doing it.

Same deal. I'm wanting to become a LEO though.

    1. It's NEVER a mistake to learn something or better yourself.

    2. Be mindful that you're not unfairly snubbing your family for your own goals. For instance, even though I REALLY want a job in LE, I wouldn't make the transition if it meant that my family's standard of living would decline.
