OP answered his own his own question in his first post. Women simply don't have interest in abstract subjects as much as men do. What collection of philosophical works are there by women? Women having traditionally being the homemakers and child rearing have been conditioned to the daily grind of relationships, etc. leaving little need or desire to question the abstract.

Also know that men have always been and always will be on the extremes compared to women. Women are more of the happy medium, while us men are both the greater phuck ups and greater successes in life. It's all rooted in our differing biology, which create our differing gender roles and expectations.

Hi. Female philosophy minor (psychology major) in college here. I love discussing philosophy with my boyfriend, my close friends, and my classmates. I tend to find online debating intimidating in general, and the atmosphere on the main misc. site of bb.com to be especially intimidating, so I mostly stick to lifting topics on the female misc.

As for politics, again, I get intimidated by debate. I also don't have much time to follow the news, so I often don't feel knowledgeable enough to debate about current events.

I think perhaps women just tend to be less confrontational than men, and so they are less likely to debate politics and philosophy online, especially in forums that are mostly about other things. In addition, I believe in the empathizer-systemizer theory, which holds that there are two different personality types: empathizing and systemizing. The empathizing personality seeks to understand and connect to people, and the systemizing personality seeks to analyze systems (think scientific theories, machines, etc...) Most men are more systemizing than empathizing, and most women are more empathizing than systemizing. Since most philosophical theories are systems of viewing the world, it makes sense that there are more men than women interested in philosophy. So it's a matter of men and women having different interests, not different ability levels or levels of intelligence.

I think this is it in a nutshell. Men typically are more interested in politics. Most girls I meet are simply not interested in politics and for the most part don't understand how laws impact their daily lives (other than abortion laws or gender discrimination). Trying to discuss economic or fiscal policy with most women is like talking to a wall.

A lot of politics in the US stems from feeling like we're being stolen from. We work hard, so the govt coming and taking taxes from us, okay. Acceptable. Roads need paving, etc. It's when we see how much of our livelihoods gets used for corruption, building bombs to kill more brown people, and buying votes that causes political discussions. Not lack of sex. It's a sense of immorality within the political system that gets people pissed. Many of us will get into these discussions while we've still got poon stank still on us. If you deduced the right answer to be no then naturally you should extend that to everyone who isn't interested politics and you would've effectively shrunken the electorate by 85+%
very few people are interested in politics, most people just care about putting food on the table and which party makes it harder or easier to do so.

Regarding the OP, who the hell would WANT to discuss philosophy with a woman anyway? If I'm with a woman the last thing on my mind would be Wittgenstein, as it would be for most men.

I believe that our democratic process might be better off if women didn't vote. This is only based on my personal experience.

That said, you can't in good faith take away their right to vote while also requiring them to pay taxes.

hmm..we might be onto something. Give folks a choice. If you want the right to vote, you will also have to pay income tax. If you're willing to forgo your voting rights, you pay no taxes.

It's already been clearly pointed out there are simply fewer females visiting sites like this, but to that I would add men are by nature more competitive.

It is this competitiveness, NOT intelligence, which brings most of us into the debate. Think about how many times you've seen a really dumb or uninformed post in R/P and thought "I should correct that imbecile!", I imagine most women wouldn't describe that as a good use of their time.

Here's what you have to keep in your mind and understand.

If you lose an internet debate you lose nothing and the only thing that can come of it is a better understanding of the topic being discussed. There is no reason to be intimidated because there are no consequences. That's why many posters in R/P are so bold with their opinions and claims.

Sometimes things get ugly when you get into religion or politics, and women get depressed more easily when you talk about genocides, killings, etc.
