Pure oxygen O2 for workouts "discussion"

I posted this in the Olympic section by mistake!!!

As a full trimix and cave diver I know there are benefits to using pure O2 for a work out. I would like to hear everyone's thoughts on this topic.

I'll reserve my thoughts for a little bit.

PS IM NOT TALKING ABOUT THOSE GIMICKS O2 IN A CAN!! I'm talking about pure medical grade oxygen and used wits a oxygen mask.
Huge difference! You can see 02 being used in any NFL game on the side lines.

would it help a lot of be limited by the amount of co2 in your blood from respiration? I just say that cause the need for breathing stems from the amount of co2 in your blood, when your low on oxygen your brain doesn't tell you to breathe faster you just fall asleep and then die if it's too low lol

The short answer Is O2 will have you ready for your next set sooner and maybe an extra set or 2. Oxygen over night will aid in recovery.

It's just not practical but possable although it is cheap. Not anyone can buy medical grade o2. But you can buy welder grade O2 and a inline filter very cheap.

There is a very in depth wiki on some of the effects this might have, it goes into detail about the uses in diving etc that you suggest.

Oxygen at 1ATM is not a problem you would a lot of hours before you even come clost to oxygen toxicity affecting your CNS or brain.

Science. Excess O2 depletes CO2, its the ratio that's important, not total O2. You turn blue from hyperventilation, not red, blue=lack of blood to cells. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperve...rome#Diagnosis

    Sure, hyperventilate all you like.

it would be more beneficial for cardio and high rep routines, dexter jackson did it before he won the Olympia. i'm doubtful it would help for powerlifting as oxygen isnt really a limiting factor in strength

You can see the guise at the World's Strongest Man taking that chit after pulling a truck or an airplane. Do they take that chit after a set of squats in the gym I wouldn't think so. For powerlifting/ordinary strongman training, I wouldn't see how this would be of benefit using cost benefit analysis.

no, it isn't, your a-vo2 difference won't change just from increased oxygen in the air

your body will compensate so that you reach a steady PH

when you see fat linemen sucking oxygen on the sideline that is still just 21% O2 79% nitrogen, and that doesn't help either

No it not! It's 100% oxygen.

After long decompression dives we go on pure O2 at the surface sometimes got 20-20min. And this is after our fast and slow gas loading tissues are saturated with oxygen from multiple decompression stops using nitorx and pure O2 at 3-5 times the pressure of 1 ATM.

The benefit I see is the time it takes to be ready for another set or catch your breath as some put it.

As for my self I know after a heavy set I just wait to catch my breath and calm down slightly befor I'm ready for another set.

That's a very interesting article I will have to read more latter on. Thanks.

BUT if using a mask to breath 100% oxygen at sea level or any level your body will not and can not turn oxygen into nitrogen. Over time you will saturate you tissues with oxygen and you will see signs of oxygen toxicity.

I may have Misinterpreted you post?

I will bring that paper you linked to the tecnical diving community and ruffle some feathers!

this seems like a serious waste of money to me, if you are really 'out of breath' after a set on a 'normal' PL routine you have srs cardiovascular issues and should look into getting over-all healthier

Not really there are ways to get O2 very cheap but the discussion is more based on function of oxygen and not cost or condition someone is in.

the oxyhaemoglobin dissociation curve is very interesting and comes up often on long decompression dives. Take a look at the curve and the look at the numbers for a partial pressure at 1 ATM.

You also have to figure in the correct amount of oxygen for what ever mix you breatheing in, trimix, nitorx or heliox.

The amount of nitrogen in you will also affect the curve

Jesse Maraunde died in 2007 and there is strong speculation it was due to over oxygenated blood.
