I've been lifting on stronglifts for the last 2.5 months seen great gains in strength, but its getting to the point where there's way too much volume.
5x5 is really tough at the moment so much that my workout is taking 2 hours to complete.
I've heard that your body produces a hormone that breaks down muscle if you workout too long any truth to it?
Do you think it would be more beneficial to switch to 3x5 for less volume and better recovery?
According to the programme I've have to deload twice and then stall again in order to drop to 3x5 but its too brutal.
I'll continue on 5x5 if its the most efficient way to get stronger.
My stats at the moment are:
Squats: 270 lbs 5x5
Bench: 160 lbs 5x5 (sh*t I know)
Overhead press:115 lbs 5x5
Deadlifts:297 lbs 1x5
Barbell Rows: 160 lbs 5x5

You could drop to a 3x5, but I highly recommend you deload first. If you're still having trouble after a deload, either extend it or drop down to 3x5 if that's what you choose.

I just reread the paragraph in SL. It seems like you can switch to 3x5 as soon as you stall on 5x5.
On StrongLifts 5x5, when you eventually stall, it will be because as the weight gets heavier you will lose the ability to handle the high volume. You will run out of recovery capacity before you run out of capacity to make quick strength gains. The logical way to conclude the program is to start cutting volume. When you stall with 5 sets, reset the weight, and drop to 3 sets.
