Just read AJ Ayer/ F.C Copleston debate from 1948, so different from todays atheists

Most of the subject was on the validity of 'metaphysics' as philosophical assertions and the existence of God. I thoroughly enjoyed the debate and actually thought F.C Copleston (the theist) made some decent points.

The major thing that got me was how civilised and technical the dialogue was. AJ Ayer was an atheist but he could really bring the noise when it came to technical philosophical arguments and demolishing metaphysical assertions as meaningless. Happy to post a link to the debate if requested but its a bit of a lengthy read

There was no 'ur a phag lol' 'who cuased God trolololol' or stealing comics or taglines from Reddit/Tumblr. Overall the old school atheists were more powerful, yet respectful while maintaining a model pf philosophical precision.

Nowadays we have Dawkins and WLC's "the universe began to exist" arguments.......for shame

I recently purchased Nietzsche's 'Twilight of the Idols' and 'Antichrist' (though I have read the latter before) and it is remarkable how much more capable and cerebral he is compared to the New-Atheists. I am sure that there are heavy duty atheist philosophers today, but they just aren't getting the same attention as the "four horsemen', probably because they conduct themselves in a civilized manner.

Yeah there are still heavy duty atheist philosophers but they sort of just hang around in academia and publish refereed papers which are usually much too technical for average joe to understand or appreciate.

I just remember you mentioned the other day if there were interesting articles written on the cosmological argument by more high powered writers in philsoophical journals. Will find and post

I think that money would be better spent on donations to cancer research, but hey, your call bro.

I'm actually touched that you repped me. I think someone needs to call Hell and let them know theyll be snowed in for awhile (ontop recently repped me too recently).

All I'm saying is something like cancer research delivers real, practical benefits to the people who need it, done by the most honest, hardworking people youll ever meet. (if your christian dudes donations go to his work on astronomy or cosmology, I support that too, but not for christian apologetics)

We struggle mightily to get whatever scraps we can get from the government to fund the work (I begin my Phd on a cancer genetics project in 6 weeks), and the work is tireless, underpaid, frequently unrewarding and underappreciated. So it kind of bothers me when a church or Christian organisation hounds people for donations when the Vatican is by far the wealthiest enterprise in the world.

And to add insult to injury, a local business had raised hundreds of dollars of donations for our research institute, and on the weekend thieves broke in, trashed the place, took everything including the donation box which clearly indicated it was for supporting cancer research......no hope for human race..

also gonna add that my grandad at the moment has weeks to live, he has pancreatic cancer which just ravaged his body out of nowhere. I have to spend time I don't have convincing my scientifically ill-informed relatives not to inject baking soda into his veins (these are the reasons I declare myself an enemy of ignorance).

I absolutely agree with you. Although to be fair, the amount of money that rolls into a Christian apologetic ministry is tiny compared to Christian global health organizations like World Vision. Not to mention all the non-religious organizations that this Christian dominated society pumps across the world.

Besides, if someone has a conviction, how can you tell them to give money otherwise? Be it secular OR religious.

ONtop888, and few (very few) theists on this board are polite and respectful. There used to be a mormon guy too, melkor. These kind of people are ideal to debate with, except that even as an atheist (more of a don't know, non-believer, rather than I know every answer through science), I can't even think of much that I would want to convince these guys of. They are living with pretty decent principles, and if they want to believe in some Gods and deities, absolutely fine with me. Any religious person, who is tolerant and humble, and does not harm other people's lives, is absolutely fine. It is the authoritarian type of religious nuts, who need to be criticized. Not much point in debating them though, unless you wanna display their stupidity for all to see. Richard Dawkins and other popular atheists should focus more on the political effects of the right wing religious fanatics in America, rather than having endless philosophical debates, which just turn into a mutual massage after a while. America has many twisted forms of religiosity, which are no different from the Wahabi fanatics. Put the fanatic right wingers from America in the same economical, political situation as Afghans and middle-easterners, and they will probably put them to shame in their cruelty, superstitions and ruthlessness. Though, little hard to beat Saudi Arabia at this game.
