    garage gym whiteboard suggestion

Does anyone have a recommendation for a size/brand of white board to get for the gym I'm setting up in my garage? an amazon link would be great, but any help would be appreciated.

I've got a decent amount of wall space, so i'm not really limited

Just go to target or office depot and eyeball one...there's nothing really special about them.

You can purchase some white melamine board from your local Home Depot or Lowes. The stuff works well with white board markers. That way you can have one that uses the entire wall if you want.

If you want the most badass dry erase board in your neighborhood (lol), get some tempered glass, spray paint the back side black, and use neon expo markers

Jeebus. Yeah, go for the glass and spray paint and neon markers.

Or, do what the Crossfit guys recommend, as does KBKB: Get a 4'x8' sheet of Melamine board from Home Depot or Lowes. (As for help. Don't be a man and walk around looking for it. Trust me on this one.) $20 or so. That's it. The Office Depot/Staples route is much, much more expensive.
You need a rack, bench and 300-lb. Oly set. Now, what was your question?

I agree with this. The only other thing I could add to this remark is that it's just much more manly to fabricate something like this for your gym than to go to the office supply store and buy one.

I was looking for something really big a while back but the price of the larger dry-erase boards were pretty steep. I ended up picking up a real big dry-erase from Fathead:

    http://www.fathead.com/general-graph...ad/?src=search

Looks clean and works well. Sometimes the markers ghost if you leave them on for too long but easy enough to clean off with a damp paper towel. Fathead usually has coupons floating around, you should be able to google them pretty easily.

    That's pretty cool.

I wonder if you can use a dry erase on glossy white paint?

Thanks, I think I will go this route. Is the Melamine in the lumber section? Can I drill it thru my drywall and into the studs?

At the stores that I've been to, yes. Start by looking near the plywood. You should be able to find some thin 4'x8' sheets of the stuff You'll also find some thicker melamine fiberboard - used for shelves and whatnot - but I don't think you want that stuff for this application.

Can I drill it thru my drywall and into the studs?
    Yep.

Home depot sells chalkboard spray paint. you could cover the whole wall and use chalk. Just another option. I think I would go for the glass and spray paint and neon markers.

I am interested in this idea for my garage as well... Would liquid nails or a similar adhesive hold the melamine board to concrete block walls?
I saw differing opinions online, anyone successfully glue paneling/board to a concrete block garage wall?

FYI it is a wall separating two townhouse garages so moisture is not an issue on this specific wall.

You could also just use dry wall anchors:

These simply screw into the dry wall as a receptacle for the mounting screw and can supposedly support 10-20 kg (~22-44 lbs) each.

    Hey guys,

I finally got to home depot last night, and they only had Melamine in the thicker 1/2" size. They suggested trying the lumber yard down the street but it was already closed. Thoughts?

    1. Return to the lumber yard when it is open.
    2. Go to another Home Depot.
    3. Go to a Lowe's.

Check at the lumber yard recommended to you by the guys at Home Depot. Check at Lowe's too.

The 1/2" Melamine that they did have was a 4'x8' sheet? What was the price?

I honestly didn't even look at the price because it would have looked horrible on the wall, just entirely too thick

I would check another Home Depot, Lowes or that lumber yard you were advised of by KBKB. It shouldnt be to expensive and they should have some pretty thin sheets available. My Home Depot has a huge pallet of them laying around.

As far as mounting it I'd just use some basic drywall screws and run it into the studs. Studs SHOULD be spaced out every 16 inches.

You could. I would by some trim board and attach it to the wall with finishing nails and liquid glue to make a frame then paint the wall with the blackboard paint.

I happened to be in target and saw a magnetic 2x3 whiteboard for $20 so I grabbed it. It won't look as good as some of the larger options, but it's more than enough for what I need, and I can still drill it into the wall, so it should look ok. I'll still post pictures here once it's up.

I wanted to come in and finally post the picture of the whiteboard I went with. It's not perfectly visible in the picture but you get the idea. The gym has taken me a few months to get together, but it's just about done for now

of course I will always want more

Another similar idea.. A friend donated an old large framed mirror to me (like something you would find at a garage sale..) I took the mirror glass out and hung it without the frame. The frame was empty now with plywood behind the mirror that was there.. I primed the plywood, then painted the plywood with chalkboard paint.. and now I have a nice framed chalkboard in my workout space.. It works great. It turned out to be a nice project for less than $10. I refused to pay $50+ for a large dry-erase board or chalkboard so it worked for me.

Thats exactly what it is. That unit you see leaning up against the wall is the original 6 foot cross members that it came with, but I realized it would fit better with the 4' so I ordered another pair. Not sure what, if anything, i will do with the 6' now

Apologies for the bright flare where the light bulb is, but this is the rack

edit: I've thought about adjusting the positioning of the platform to be maybe a foot away from the wall. creating a gap between the wall and platform, but giving me another foot of space between rack and the edge of the platform.

    thoughts?

Why? Do you feel there is not enough room to do some of your lifts? I think it would look odd having the 1 ft gap and would give you something to trip on. I would either use the 6ft piece then you can have more space inside the rack or you can add another piece of platform to make it stretch out another couple of feet.

Why did you go with the W-4 over the R-4? Just curious how you made that decision. It's a nice looking set up.

Also how do you like those bumpers? I am planning to get the hi-temps by rogue because of price and durability but damn I like the looks of those, especially The competition colored bumpers, nice
