A dumbbell with 100lbs mark on them in big public gyms like this:
is lighter than 100 pound metal dumbbel like this:
(this is only illustration)
I struggle with 100s in my gym, and only big bros lift them. They are fully iron and theyre big as fuark. Then I come to the Misc and some 160lbs skinnyfats lift it for 12 reps. And its ALWAYS the rubber dumbbells not bigger than 60s in my gym. Also when I change my gym from time to time, I can lift heavier ones for more reps. My theory is that those gyms want to make those skinnyfat newcomers think that they are lifting big weights, so they renew their membership and buy their protein shakes (semi srs).
Im not saying their weight is 30lbs less than written, but it must be at least 5-10lbs.
Cliffs: New plastic dumbbells are labeled wrong therefore are lighter than old metal ones. Fact.
EDIT: This thread is about mislabeling dumbbells and plates in a gyms. Im not saying that 100lbs of rubber =/= 100lbs of iron.

People thought I was nuts when I said weights differ by gym. I could do seated overhead DB shoulder press with the 85's and a spot in my old gym and 75's for reps with no spotter
In the new gym I can barely get the 75's up.
Also the machines at Planet Fitness were terribly mis-labeled
BRB benching the stack on machine bench press (245) when its realistically like 180Ohio State Crew

They are probably the same mass, but if they are different shapes they will have different moments of inertia, and you are presumably doing dumbell curls in a twisting motion. If the mass is concentrated towards the centre of the dumbell (first pic) then it's got a smaller moment of inerta and it's easier to rotate, whereas if the mass is further away from the centre it's harder to rotate (meaning, it requires more torque to attain the necessary angular momentum for the lift).
If you're doing something like a concentration curl it shouldn't be any different, just placebo.

Weights will always vary. The 45's at my gym are actually 47lbs.
198lbs
goals:
205
8%bf
Notable lifting accomplishments:
2009- slp state meet 415 raw bench @181
Highest gym bench- 475x3 reps raw bench @ 203 (jan 2011)
Deadlift- 685 w/belt and chalk (gym lift)
Squat- 405 for reps (working on it)
I will be back and I will prevail.

At my gym the weights are listed differently.
A 50 pound weight at another gym will be listed as 52.5 because of the little bar/grip/handle holding the actual weights would be around 2.5 pounds.
The weights go like this at my gym 63, 65, 74,78, 85.
At my old gym the iron weights would read 80 pounds but in actuality it was 85
at ****gy time soccer mom gyms with the rubber weights it's exactly what it reads.
Idk if this makes sense, Im focusing on other **** atm."Just lift it"
Staying consistent F'n works

I think there is more of a mind thing with steel vs rubber. It looks heavier based on people's idea of rubber vs steel. Plus people might concentrate harder considering rubber might feel better than steel hitting you if dropped. Not to mention it might take a little more energy rolling hard a$$ steel with metal poles sticking out up your thighs to bench than it would rubber weights.
