Can you use whey protein shakes as a meal replacements?

I'm curious. As of right now, I'm real low on cash but I have a lot of ON whey tubs and I'm wondering if I can use it to replace a meal. I normally use 2 full scoops with milk and water mixed. Is this ok being that whey protein is designed to supplement? Will too much whey be counterproductive to my goal to lose fat? I'm about 5'10 220

If you didn't use them a replacements for food you'd otherwise eat, then they would be in addition to your current calorie intake, which would likely be counter-productive to fat loss. But if you are replacing an equivalent number of calories and still meeting your macros, then it's irrelevant for fat loss.

The downside is that most folks tend to feel less satiated from liquid food. You will also have to be careful with fiber intake. Micronutrient intake may not be what it should, etc.

If you are low on cash, that is understandable, been there, but I would still recommend taking some sort of multivitamin.

But I wouldn't recommend it as a lifestyle, it just doesn't sound healthy in the longrun to me.

    they're pretty fast digesting.

mix them with a little milk. psyllium husk fibre or have some nuts along with your shakes, to provide your body with a bit more of a prolonged energy source x

whey alone can spike insulin levels, which probably isnt what you want to be happening all day when you're trying to loose fat.

it's always beneficial to get proper solid food if you can.

Yea you can, if you are on a defficit the insulin response will not matter. I would as others suggested try to get some whole foods.

I have used them as meal replacements in mydiet for a long time and have made some pretty good progress. If you are low on money it is a cheap and convenient. Not only that, liquid meals are much easier to measure and be accurate with leading to better progress. That being said its no way to live in the long term and the more whole food you incorporate into your diet the better.

Depends how you define a meal? If it's just for calories and macros, then go for it. I do this currently on IF.

But if you're eating 3 or 4 meals a day, and trying to cut calories, I'd rather have something more filling.

Personally, I've never had Whey with just water/liquid, and never will. I use it as a supplement.

If you have a blender, just buy a cheap yohgurt, maybe some sour cream to get in your required fats, and possibly even a cereal with some good macros (While cutting, I replace the cereal with sunflower seeds)

Toss the first two ingredients in your blender, turn it on, wait for them to get semi-liquidy (Personally, I prefer my yohgurt to stay a little thick, so I use my blender on the lowest possible setting), then start pouring in the whey, slowly. Too fast and it'll make a huge clump on the bottom. Drink that or pour it in a bowl with the cereal/sunflower seeds. Infinitely more filling than whey+water, and you get much more balance Macro-wise.

    This.

Also, I don't see the logic in using whey to save money. Chicken is pretty freaking cheap, and it is definitely cheaper than whey. I get breasts at walmart for 1.99/lbs and legs for even less.

1 4 0z serving of chicken breast has around the same amount of protein and fat as a scoop of protein powder, and it's real food.

A big part of cutting should be looking for satiating ways to eat a calorie deficit. With that in mind, eating some chicken against drinking a whey protein shake, chicken wins.

Though all that matters at the end of the day is the number of calories and the macros.
    Currently cutting.

Mix with some milk, almond or peanut butter for healthy fats and some oats and you will have a balanced healthy meal.

    ^ Quoted for truth

Having said that, I'll routinely substitute some whey protein for breakfast, not because it's better but because it's quick/easy and a better alternative than the crap I could grab for breakfast at work. When I'm home, I'd rather just scramble some eggs.
