It's interesting that in the movies of the 40s someone like Robert Mitchum represented the pinnacle of the male physique. It would be a while before bodies like Sandow's were common on the big screen. And, I would dare say, not too many stars would top him even today.

I was interested in his routine so I googled it. Looks like a lot of compound exercises.

    Online source:
Sandow was a big believer in gymnastics and bodyweight exercises as well. He would often combine his training, doing gymnastics and bodyweight mixed in with weight training. Below is an example of one of his methods of training. He would do the exercises with dumbbells, barbells and kettlebells, like most of the old-timers.

    Overhead Press
    Snatch
    Cleans
    One-Arm Press
    Bent Press
    Curls
    Sit-ups
    Pushups
    Dips
    Squats

Notes: Train consistently 2-3 days per week and add weight to the bar whenever possible and get lots of rest, eat good food and drink plenty of water.

Didn't know that; nor about what Marius_Ursus wrote: "Also never train to exhaustion."

Thank you both. Was going to rep; have to wait a bit. Made a note to later
