what burns more calories: cardio or weight lifting?

always wondered this. lets say 45min workout, do you burn more calories cardio or weight lifting? lets say cardio is elliptical, treadmill, or running outside. and weight lifting is just your standard exercises with weights, bars, cables, etc

please don't over analyze this. i know the answer is "it depends" on what you do etc etc but just overall???

Minute for minute: Always cardio unless you are not trying, period.

unless you're performing a crossfit type workout... You're more likely to burn more calories running or doing a an aerobic exercise. However, the question is... at what point are you burning the most calories from "FAT." And that all depends on where your heart rate is. So realistically.. either can be just as efficient at fat loss (if that's your ultimate goal). Hope this helps!

Ive done a push/pull workout and I burned 1800 calories during the workout. Ive never burned that many calories during cardio. Long term effects, having more muscle will burn more calories while being sedentary. So, conventional wisdom will think cardio, facts point to weightlifting. Most fitness models will say they dont even do cardio, just lift weights and control calories in versus calories out.

Here is a pic of the calories burned during a weightlifting only workout

the actual workout is the Greg Plitt head strong workout. Look at greg plitt and he doesnt do cardio, except for conditioning, not for burning calories. He uses his weight ligting routines to aid in calories burned.

thats it? must be really a super slow pace of walking. you would easily burn way more calories lifting weights, unless you always wait 5 minutes between each set and do 1 rep at 50% of your max.

It is slow pace on the treadmill. I have cerebral palsy. I burn a maximum of 200 calories an hour working out. also body bugg verified.

how do you know they are not accurate? If they were all inaccurate like everyone is claiming, then there would be a class action lawsuit.

I can promise you it was probably the most intense weight lifting day of my life. It was extremely exhaustive. Maybe I can push myself harder than anyone. I bring the intensity and I workout a lot harder than the average person.

what are you basing the 100 calories off of? How do you know it is off by 100? Im curious because I have wanted the program, but I have read so many negatives and positives.

I have no idea what is accurate as far as burning calories. your maintenance calories is easy to calculate.

I believe it was about 2 hours. lots of supersets and drop sets. For example, one set would be:
    incline DB presses 6-8 reps
    supersetted with
    pushups til failure (about 20)
    supersetted with
    barbell rows 6-8 reps
    supersetted with
    pullups (12-15 reps)

I would do 3 sets per exercise group. There was a total of 7 exercise groups.

This was also done while fasted. Although, I did consume 1 serving of BCAA's, creatine and a NO booster.

What does it matter that I depleted all carbs? That's the whole point of training fasted. I didn't record the exact minutes and seconds of the workout. I was guesstimating. I do remember after the workout a personal trainer came up to me and said that he was watching me workout and it seemed very intense and he was going to use most of my routine with his clients.
I was at 6ft, 225 and about a 13% BF last August when I did this at 31 years old. Completely possible. If you fail to think this can happen, you fail in your workouts.

    Sure guy

    In my opinion cardio

Involves over half of the body

    Non stop movement

Unless you were weight lifting at a massive pace cardio is going to burn more calories 9/10 times

You would burn more doing cardio but if you had to pick, lift weights instead and add cardio where necessary. Running burns a ton of calories. I like to alternate weight lifting days and running.

The answer is not black and white. It depends on the intensity and duration of each. If your comparing jogging for an hour to the standard 6-12 rep 3 minutes of rest between sets lifting for an hour then cardio does by a long shot. If your comparing an hour long cross fit workout where you circuit train for an hour to jogging for an hour its probably going to be the cross fit.

To put that into perspective Lance Armstrong burns 5200 calories per day during the Tour De France and rides for 6 hours each day..... Hes not even doing 900 calories/hour unless he only burns 700 calories in the other 18 hours of the day.

Cardio, there is absolutely no question.

I don't see anyone burning 1800 calories in a two hour workout regardless of what they are doing, I doubt my hour with weights burns 200, though it may be close.

If you really think the calories burned on the magic gadget is right and really want to prove it.

Calculate your maintenance calories with a sedentary activity factor. Every day for a month eat maintenance + what the shiny gadget told you that you burned in workouts the previous day. If the gadget is accurate, your weight should be approximately the same at the end of the month, with a little slop for water variances etc.

My bet, you'll gain weight because the gadget greatly over-reports calories burned.
Now cutting: Got a little more squishy than I wanted, heading down to 160lbs and seeing how things look.

    5/24/13 176lbs
    5/31/13 174lbs
    6/06/13 172.5lbs
    6/14/13 172lbs (? :/)
    6/21/13 170.5lbs
7/06/13 171 lbs (Gasp blew my diet at Dollywood, must give up and become couch potato).

At my peak endurance training I could run close to 8 miles in an hour - approximately 800 calories. These days I'm doing good to get 5 (it's hot down here in texas and I've got to take breaks now and then to walk and cool off) - approximately 500 calories burned. I've got no hard data, but I'd be surprised if I could manage to burn 200 calories per hour of lifting. The kind of maximal effort I put into heavy lifting sets means I spend close to 4-5 minutes resting for every solid minute of exercise in the gym. After the big combination lifts are out of the way and I'm working a circuit of smaller isolation exercises the rest/activity ratio improves a bit, but even then I probably spend 2-3 minutes standing around for every minute I spend lifting.

I don't bother to count my lifting into my maintenance. If I'm looking to lose weight, the weight loss 'umph' comes from dietary control with a moderate amount of extra cardio.
    Lifts:
    Bench: 305lb
    Deadlift: 415lb
    Dip: bodyweight + 230lb
    Pull-up: bodyweight x2

"There's a lot of 5'11 200-225 lbs guys with 10-12% body fat on the Internet. In reality, their "10-12%" body fat is more like 15% body fat or more. Everyone thinks they're on their way to single digit body fat as soon as they see a blurry four-pack in the right lighting. Your final body weight at 5-6% will be a lot less than what you think."
