Voters Defeat Gay Marriage Again
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – North Carolina voters approved a state constitutional amendment Tuesday declaring marriage is solely between a man and a woman, dealing a setback to gay-rights advocates.

What's wrong with civil union with the same rights and privileges as marriage?

The amendment approved in NC not only bans marriage, but also civil unions and domestic partnerships. It entirely eliminates what you suggest.

It is unfortunate, but not surprising. People's rights should never be voted on. Yes, I believe marriage is a basic right. The fight for fairness and equility will go on.

They've already had something like this in the books before. This is a redundant law in NC what a waste of time.

They should be allowed civil unions with the same rights and privileges.

It's sad really, people voting on restricting others in matters that don't negatively affect anyone in anyway. These are the same people who were voting for the segregation of blacks.

Marriage isn't a right. You can't just 'think' something's a right, therefore it is.

If government didn't license marriage we wouldn't even be having this conversation, nor would anyone.

itt: sexual orientation = race
You know only about 20-30 years ago it was the consensus that homosexuality was a disease. So your frame of reference is much different than older folks on the issue.

What's the difference? You can't change your race, you can't change your social orientation. And BTW, people use to believe the earth was flat, they were wrong. They use to believe homosexuality was a disease, they were wrong, what's your point?

Proof you're born gay?
Secondly, not everyone spends most of their days online reading the newest scientific headlines. They grew up thinking homosexuality was a disease and 'gross', so they have a stigma against it. It's really not hard to understand. Your frame of reference is different.

Prove to me you're not born gay, when did you decide to be attracted to bitches and not dudes? You didn't. Neither did gays. And thinking something is nasty doesn't give anyone the right to restrict those performing those nasty actions. How does two dudes getting married affect you in any way?

If I'm getting this right, TSTBrah isn't against gay marriage (at least he isn't arguing that here), he is just saying that you have to understand the reference point of people older than we are. It's hard for them to think of being gay as just who someone is, not a "problem," because they have been told that it is a disease or whatever their entire life.

This x2.
The rights of a minority should never be voted on by a majority. My guess is that some southern states, if given the opportunity, would vote to repeal the Civil Rights Act.

You do realize this isn't proof of anything right? It could easily be triggered by childhood growing conditions, the people you grew up around..really anytime during your pre-pubescent life.
It's hard to take a firm stand on something that is unknown. Which is pretty funny that most atheists hate theists, then turn around and are gung-ho about gay rights when it's also not empirically proven.

Actually in this country you're given two options: to vote yes or to vote no, so yes you do have the right to restrict the union of two males or females.
You're confusing me for the people I'm describing. I have no preference either way, I really don't care. In not caring, I couldn't care less about going out and voting for gay rights. I personally don't believe the government should license marriage, in doing so they wouldn't define it, and this whole problem would be solved.

The Civil Rights Act definitely had some bad pieces to it, it was the building block of government intervention into business and private property. I'm not so sure a government mandating equality fixes the moral problem at hand either.
And again, marriage is not a right.

Were you just addressing gay "nasty actions" to use your words...
Or any "nasty actions"?
We as a society restrict "nasty actions", as you call them all the time...
Just trying to understand if you're only for the freedom to perform certain "nasty actions' or all???

This thread is filled to the brim with people who absolutely do not understand what rights are.
