A local amateur MMA fighter beats a man to death (serious) (long read) (vids/pics)

A local MMA fighter that has had several amateur fights in the Southern IL area is being held responsible for the beating death of a 23 year old man. This really shows the lack of respect and discipline in amateur fighters. It makes me sad to know that someone that is a representative of local MMA doesn't have the discipline to know when to stop beating someone before they die.

MOUNT CARMEL, Ill. — A Mount Carmel, Ill., man beaten severely during an altercation last month died Wednesday morning at an Evansville hospital.

William “Billy” Gunzel, Jr., 23, died at 7:07 a.m. at Deaconess Hospital. Family members said he never regained consciousness after the beating. An official with the Vanderburgh County Coroner’s office said that Gunzel died of apparent head injuries sustained in the beating. An autopsy was to be performed Wednesday afternoon.

“It happened at Mom’s house on Sunday, Sept. 25,” said Gunzel’s sister, Kimberly Sullens of Mt. Carmel. “Some underage kids showed up that had been drinking, and Billy tried to run them off. That’s when he was jumped and beaten.”

One suspect was arrested at the time of the altercation. Jeremy A. Birkla, 19 of Mt. Carmel was formally charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm — a class-3 felony. He posted $1,000 cash bond and was released pending a preliminary hearing on Nov. 21 in Wabash County Circuit Court. Birkla is known in Southern Illinois as an amateur mixed martial arts fighter, who fought formal bouts through a local MMA promotions firm.

A 2006 graduate of Mount Carmel High School, Gunzel, who was unemployed at the time of the beating, had just been hired to work at the power plant near Princeton, Ind., his sister said, and was to report to work two days later.

“We have had so much support from the community throughout all of this,” Sullens said. “We just knew he would pull through, but an infection took over that affected his lungs, and he just gave up.”

Gunzel had been in a coma since being transferred from the hospital in Mt. Carmel to Deaconess Hospital on Sept. 25.

A fund to help the Gunzel family with medical expenses is still active at the First National Bank in Mount Carmel.

The investigation into Gunzel’s death is ongoing. No additional charges had been filed as of late Wednesday.

I totally agree with you. You see the absolutely most trashy people at MMA events. Guys and Girls both are super trashy. Rednecks and Thugs are everywhere and all the women look like std strippers. AND I pay $30 to see this shyt wtf, I'm glad I only go to watch my training partners fight and then leave.

Makes me glad I belong to a gym that teaches respect and discipline. A Nova Uniao USA school where the owners and instructors are a cop and a correctional officer.

This article is sad, the guy was just protecting his family. I couldn't agree more on this point, most fight sports/martial arts seem to teach that outside of the gym/dojo/whatever you want to call it you only act in self defense. MMA it seems has attracted a lot of "coaches" that are just not in the sport for the right reasons, or that have the right attitude.

Some MMA noob came at me once, he had only been going 6months... He didn't realise I lifted weights, when he grabbed me I Overhead pressed his skinny ass and threw him at a wall and not a single **** was given.

Who ever started it doesn't matter. It matters that a trained fighter with 9 amateur mma fights took the beating way too far. It gives the MMA world a bad name.

I agree UFC attract trash in general, I thought the Rio crowd made your typical white trash at American events look like choir boys so its not just limited to whites but the general people attracted as a whole.

UFC could use some professionalism to quell the trashy image imo, getting rid of the silly gladiator theme was a good start, now to remove the crappy metalcore music and a president that actually tries to act like one. I also think the cage and its connotations doesnt help but not much can be done about that.

Ah I wish Pride was still the dominant MMA company.

They all train "UFC" and have that mindset that training "UFC" makes them tough. It's called MMA for a reason, you need to study and focus on the individual aspects of each different martial art. That way you respect multiple disciplines. Not just try to through everything together to make a tough guy tapout fighter.

this thread is so true. i have 2 friends that are just like that. one is covered in tattoos and always wear tapout, the other is a drunken alcoholic smoker. everytime we're out, they pick a fight. i got so fed up with it, i stopped talking to them.
