    powerlifting in college

i understand its a club sport now at some schools, but does anyone ever see it being a D1 sport?

and if its a club sport, what are the up sides of it? like is there a training room separate from the college gym? would having a good PLing history look good on a college ressume? etc.

    discuss this...

I don't see it being an NCAA sport any time soon. Weightlifting is unified and is in the Olympics and is still just a club sport.

And I can't imagine that having any sports background wouldn't look good to colleges. If nothing else, it can't hurt. I got a few scholarships for what most people wouldn't consider a sport and would've gotten more scholarships if I would've applied to more schools. But as far as I know there are no schools that give powerlifting (or weightlifting, for that matter) scholarships.

We have one up here. Its nicer because you can apply for grants from the school only bad thing is it's a pain in the ass to hold meets cause everything has to be in writing cause all the equipment is owned by the school

I dont see it becoming a NCAA santioned sport because it might pull athletes away from football which is of course is NCAAs money maker. Putting it on college resume might not help but, some might understand the discipline and dedication it takes to be a power lifter and this could help a little. My university has a "power lifting team" but I don't think they travel like a club team for meets. It could help you get an internship with the athletic programs' weight room. Or help you get a job at a college's student gym. It also might look good for a graduate school resume if you are applying for a masters in something like ex. science. Especially if your looking for a graduate position.

It would look good on a college application because it shows you aren't spending time doing stupid stuff, but using dedication and commitment in a sport.
    I don't care.

Yea, for most school its just a club sport or registered student organization. Or even just a couple people lifting together. It really depends on the school. Some have separate training rooms and some are stuck lifting in the college gym with everyone else. And it could go on your resume depending what you are applying for and what you did in PL or your club. For example, our club president created the FSU Weightlifting Club and put together the FSU Powerlifting team and hosted his own non-sanctioned powerlifting event. Then went on to host a USAPL sanctioned powerlifting event with a symposium the day before where several bodybuilders/powerlifters with doctorates spoke. That definitely looks good on his resume because it shows leadership, people skills, communication skills, responsibility and alot of other things that can stand out.

    EDIT:

There are many schools in Texas and Louisiana that have some really strong powerlifters. Just look at the most recent USAPL Collegiate Nationals to see the best schools and strongest lifters. Also, you can check PL Watch to see what colleges are listed on there. And worst comes to worst, you go to a school without a team and you create your own.

Biggest schools right now are LSU, ULL, La Tech, and Texas. There's a bunch of others with very good or up and coming teams, but those four are definitely the best in the country. Northeastern and Penn State both have strong teams and are the closest to you.

It won't ever be an NCAA sport because it is boring as $hit to watch. There is no money in it either. Ultimate Frisbee will be a recognized Olympic sport before powerlifting.

Maybe for women, since they always need stuff to balance out football for Title IX. But, there are many, many sports that are ahead of powerlifting on that list. Like rugby. And horseback riding.

To have my club train at the uni gym they wanted $12,000 per year. If I had $12,000 per year to spend on the club I wouldn't pay it to share 2 squat racks 2 bent bars with 50 other people. Commercialised scum bags.

Luckily a local PCYC allows me to train/train club members without harassment.

No one knows or cares about Powerliftng except for the eccentric few. You can win the world championships 9 times in a row, be the best drug tested Powerlifter in the world and you'll just be another paying amateur.

Too bad you are not Australian you would be eligible for student welfare as well as an interest free government loan that you only have to start paying back when you earn above ~$35,000.

Sure is bad in the land of opportunity, either work three jobs while studying full time or have spiralling debt from a loan shark and at the end of it all you have a degree will such poor job prospects you'll be scrounging for minimum wage jobs with the rest of the overqualified masses. You might get lucky though, some people are born into rich families.

but honestly i like PL for what it is, not sure why, but i love it so damn much. money isnt an issue for me, i know it wont. if i have to work 4 jobs and get no sleep and live off of powdered milk and meatloaf but it gets to mean i do what i love to do/my dream then i know i can do it.

Me and my training partner started our club. We got some funding from the school but it was a lot of hard work. Definatly worth it though. Competing as a team representing your school is a really cool experience.
