    The Calories Don't Add up

    Many of you may too have noticed this in your favorite protein bars. So I did some research and found that glycerol is used in the bar and is often left out of the total carb count. Also I found that it may not always be metabolized the same way..

    This is a small excerpt from a article on protein bars.
    "Although the FDA may insist that glycerol be listed as a carbohydrate, that doesn't mean that eating your favorite New-Age bar will add to your waistline. The body utilizes only a small portion of glycerol as carbohydrate, so any calorie contribution due to its conversion to carbohydrate is relatively small."

    Supreme Protein-Caramel Nut Chocolate= 400 calories, 36grams of carbs(1g fiber, 7g sugar, 27g sugar alcohols), 30g protein, and 15g of fat.

    7g of sugar=28 calories
    assuming sugar alcohol caloric value to be 2.6, 2.6x27=70.2 calories
    30g protein=120 calories
    15g fat=135 calories
    TOTAL=353.2

    So now it has me wondering how I should count the total caloric value of protein bars?
    Possibly changes if on a empty stomache or if you already ate some sort of carbohydrate?

    It's less than 50 calories....your calorie requirement guesstimate for the day is not that accurate. Worry about something else, like eating real food.

    I have found several packaged food items with bad math too. It seems to be pretty widespread. I would suggest contacting the manufacturer directly if it's important to you.

    I suppose it's pretty standard to list sugar alcohols as 4 cal/gm. There is maltitol in this syrup that I have and they're calling it 4 too.
