If you want my humble opinion, you're better off buying whey protein, eat above maintenance AND, in the times you find necessary, making your own mass gainer at home, which will be cheaper and of better quality than anything you buy.
EDIT: In all honesty, many mass gainers are made from sugars and lower quality carb sources... Just make your own at home.

Well, people use different recipes, most mix whey with peanut butter and some carb source in a blender with milk... I don't use mass gainers, so I'm not the best person to suggest you recipes, but I'm sure there are plenty of members who'll be glad to tell a nice recipe. Maybe you should try the search function, probably a lot of recipes are gonna show up.
EDIT: Also, any whey brand will serve you. Choose one which dissolves well and tastes good, and that's not very expensive too.

You can have just whey protein, or you can use both whey and a mass gainer... Or, if you're hitting your protein needs and caloric goals with your diet alone, you don't even need to use one or another.
About using whey after a workout... That's a common bodybuilding myth, you can see it disproved in several threads in this forum.

Optimum Nutrition my personal favorite Whey protein
and for mass Granola works wonders- my favorite is Heartland oats
smoothies are a great way to make your own mass gainer
Fruit like bananas and berries are almost all carbs and blend some oats or granola into your protein/milk/peanut butter- bingo and they are delicious[300 Spartan Crew][Helot Trial Member] 5/18/2012

mass gainers are just protein shakes with cheap dextrose or maltodextrin in them. i would never pay for a mass gainer.
whey protein is the expencive part and massgainers allow the company to get away with putting in less protein and filling them with cheap sugars.Certified Exercise Physiologist by the American College of Sports Medicine
