This thread is for those of you who have Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), know someone with IBD whether it be family or friend, or are empathetic to those with IBD.
DEAR MISC,
I'm participating in a charity walk for Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis on May 5th (this Saturday).
Personally, I have gone through hell with IBD. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis at age 11. Through middle school and high school I missed, on average, 50 - 60 days of school each year. My average day was spent crawled up on my bed in a fetal position due to the intense abdominal pain I experienced. I never stepped foot into a gym during these years and my diet was primarily bread and soup because neither were likely to upset my stomach.- Crohn's disease is a chronic (ongoing) disorder that causes inflammation of the digestive or gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Although it can involve any area of the GI tract from the mouth to the butt, it most commonly affects the small intestine and/or colon.
- Ulcerative Colitis differs Crohn's disease. Crohn's can affect any area of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the small intestine and colon. Ulcerative Colitis, on the other hand, affects only the colon. The inflammation involves the entire rectum and extends up the colon in a continuous manner. There are no areas of normal intestine between the areas of diseased intestine. In contrast, such so-called "skip" areas may occur in Crohn's disease. Ulcerative Colitis affects only the innermost lining of the colon, whereas Crohn's disease can affect the entire thickness of the bowel wall.
When I was 16, the disease ultimately overcame me and my GI doctor made me choose between a surgery and death. I chose the surgical route and ended up having my entire large intestine removed and being given an ileostomy. To sum up the story, normal people poop out their butts, I poop out the side of my abdomen through my small intestine into a bag. For the past 3 years, I have been entirely symptom free and in remission. I am now able to do everything I couldn't before.
It is because of these experiences that I have come out a much stronger individual and grown an appreciation for all of life around me. I started powerlifting last year with the primary goal of proving to myself and others that Crohn's Disease (et al) can be defeated. You can do anything that you set your mind to. I want to become a role model to show the children who are in the position that I once was that there is indeed hope.
If you have any version of Irritable Bowel Disease, or have any loved family member or friend who has gone through the suffering of having this, please consider donating to my cause.
You are able to donate using a credit or debit card online. The money does not go to me at all, merely towards the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. I will do my best to give measly reps people who donate. The link is at the top of this thread and directly below:

UC can actually be cured with the removal of your large intestine. Many people don't have to go that far, but if it ever gets to that point feel free to message me with any questions you have. It's a tough choice. Looking at your recent thread it seems like you have your diet under control though, so kudos bro . Stay healthy!
edit: Let's hope that by the time we have kids, there will be a medicinal cure to these fukken things. It's only matter of time.I will be the best

Well yea haha, but it's not really a cure, just the only thing we can do to stop it entirely. I met a girl tonight who had Crohn's since she was 9, we had a long talk and she enlightened me quite a bit. I'm going to her doctor Monday to have a check-up
Edit: Sent a tweet about it to raise awareness, maybe a couple of my friends will help out. Most of my them don't know I have UC, so it might not interest themLast edited by bazzy; 05-04-2012 at 09:15 PM.
