Ok so all i read is
"have to be in a calorie surplus to put on even a gram on muscle" and now its annoying me.
I starting lifting 3-4 times a week at my local gym for the last 2 months....i have been on a 800-1000 defect also.....ive gone from 175lbs to 155 lbs. My biceps are 1/2 inch bigger and my chest looks bigger than ever.
So i am gaining muscle on a defect and quite a large one.....someone prove me you cant gain muscle on a defect ty.

"have to be in a calorie surplus to put on even a gram on muscle" is bull****, especially for nooblets like youself. It does become more challenging for advanced athletes to do so and can be like watching grass grow in a drought.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

I just want this trend of bs **** to stop on here people saying surplus surplus!!! giving bad info.
"im bulking" bad excuse for people to endulge in a piece of cake and some ice cream to get into that surplus at the end of the day.
ill stay with my oats, brown rice, vegatables, chicken brest, salmon and abit of peanut butter now and again....and wont touch sugar...stay on my defect and build muscle tyvm.

Ummmm...its called noob gains? cmon bro
You honestly have a lot to learn. And if you've noticed anyone above 190lbs and somewhat muscular wont be saying what you are saying.
Not that I believe in the whole "bulking thing"(unless on the tech) but you still need more calories than what you are consuming to even maintain my physique.Last edited by CalebRM; 04-30-2012 at 06:21 PM.

noobs gain plenty of muscle on a deficit, intermediate lifters may gain small amounts, but at an extremely slow rate not even worth measuring.
to gain enough muscle to make it worthwhile, and in a reasonable time frame, YOU MUST BE IN A SURPLUS. not only that, but being in a deficit, especially or extended periods of time screws with your hormones making it hard to gain anything. cortisol goes up, testosterone and other anabolic hormones go down. cortisol increase is a natural stress response, reducing glucose uptake of skeletal muscle as well as amino acid uptake and protein synthesis being reduced. protein synthesis is metabolically expensive, so without the extra fuel needed to do it, it's not going to go much farther beyond repairing damage inflicted to skeletal muscle, and there certainly won't be the over-compensation that builds muscle going on.
