Thank you to everyone in this thread for changing my shaving life. Just had my first wetshave with my safety razor...Oh my god incredible. Best shave I've ever gotten.
Edwin Jagger DE86
Astra blade
Van Der Hagen brush, bowl, and soap
Went once with the grain, once across, and one against.
Didn't cut myself once surprisingly. Had absolutely no tugging and pulling like I usually feel with the cartridges, this razor cut through 4 days of growth and I couldn't even feel the blade on my face.
Usually after shaving with my Gillette fusion my chin and bottom of my neck always had rough spots. After wetshaving I got those spots as smooth as a prom queen's thigh.
Not to mention it was kinda fun lathering up the brush and doing it old school. Razor burn wasn't too bad, definitely manageable with some after shave. I want to get some witch hazel like some people have suggested here.
Never going back.Last edited by TheCappo; 03-05-2013 at 11:31 AM.

I stopped over at Merz today and picked some sh*t up.
iColoniali is my favorite aftershave but the Pre' de PROVENCE is a very close second. I decided to pick up the Pre' de PROVENCE shave soap and shave cream. This stuff is quality. There is virtually no difference in smell between the cream, the soap, or the aftershave. With some other brands you can tell there's a clear difference in smell between products, like cologne, soap, cream, splash, etc, even though they are labeled as having the same scent.
The one lady there remembers me when I come in and she always gives me freebies. This time I got a full size sample of the Musgo Real Lime basil shaving soap and some other "Kells Original" aloe blend soap. Never heard of the last one, but of course I'll give it a whirl.

I am too impatient, small dings and cuts always happen for me, but when I take my time with it, they are minimal or non existent. I do dislike my razor a lot though, too short, control is awful IMO.
BTW Alex got the Park silvertip brush you're always linking about two weeks ago, it is quality.
Is there a reason why I should have multiple brushes? I have a crappy one I got at CVS and no matter how well I treat it, it is usually stiff.
Ordered some North Woods soap and some America soap from Mama Bears, wanted the Creme Brulee, but my total was getting to be a bit higher than I'd like. We'll see how the next two treat me. I kinda wish the scent on the frankincense & mhyrr soap I bought from them projected a bit more.Fitness Journal:

So far with a Merkur 33C I've tried Astra Superior Platinum, Merkur, Derby, Bluebird, 7 O' Clocks. My Ranking would be
1) 7 O' Clock
2) Astra Superior Platinum
These I don't like:
3) Merkur
4) Bluebird
5) Derby
Still got a bunch more blades to try from my sample set, but I liked the 7 O' Clocks and Astra's so much I already ordered those
Technique & lathering skills definitely improving

Trying this out, so the best starting razor everyone recommends is the Edwin Jagger De89bl? http://www.amazon.com/Edwin-Jagger-D...+safety+razor?
What about good blades for someone just starting?

Do NOT go with compact or 'C'. They have bad control unless you have small hands, pretty much everyone in here learned how to shave with disposable razors or something like the gilette Mach 3 type razors. Any of the safety razors with 'Long' handles will be the most similar to what most of us are used to using.
I have the Merkur C and I've been in the market for a long handle razor and a straight razor, but right now funds are a little tight so I won't likely be buying more shaving supplies minus cream and blades for a little while.
EDIT: On a positive note, just received my two new purchases of Mama Bear soaps, smell real good man. I haven't had a chance to use either, but the frankincense and mhyrr is nice, lathers pretty well too.Last edited by 2 D; 03-08-2013 at 08:07 PM.

Safety razor user since August. I got a sampler pack of razors and my first time I used Feathers changed my thinking. They're awesome. I'm srsly not interested in"searching" for anything comparable.
For the record I've been using a Merkur 34c.Redskins | San Antonio Basketball Team | Washington Baseball Team | Washington Hockey Team
