The first thing that I look at when choosing a soap is the ingredient list. If there are an abundance of chemicals I become much less interested. I also prefer tallow based soaps to glycerin based products. I wouldn't rule out trying one again at some point, but so far none of them have matched the quality of shave that I get from a tallow soap.
Then I look at price. I have a hard time paying more than $20 for a soap, I probably wouldn't do it. There is absolutely still a market for more expensive "luxury" soaps, but there are also TONS of quality soaps out there that are far less expensive. People are aware of this, so you'd really only be marketing to the guys who don't care about the price. Most new DE shavers get into it to save money. Might be a good idea for your company to have a few options of varying price.
Then I look at the scent variety. I like manly scents. It's pretty rare that I want to try a flowery or fruity soap.

Just had my first shave with the Merkur HD 34C. Just used a standard gillete can of shaving gel. I was blown away by how easily i managed to cut the hairs, it was literally like a hot knife going through butter. Surprised i only nicked myself twice on the neck near adams apple, only small nicks completely negligible BUT VERY IMPRESSED for a first shave. I was using the Feather Blades. Just wondering if i should now invest in a stand for my safety razer to dry and do you you guys losen the razer so the blade is free standing to dry? The gillete can was $8 how does buying a bowl/shaving soap/brush and adding water (i assume thats what you do) compare economically and performance wise with canned gel/foam?

Looking to buy a modern DE. I have a futura but it's a little aggressive even on one. Who's got recommendations for a mild modern DE?
PS, I have just about every vintage Gillette."You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action!"

Thanks for helping kunts
Went with the Parker pack and had a go with it yesterday. It was hard for me to keep the angle right on my face. That said, I experienced almost no irritation on my neck and it's quite a sensitive area.
I got one or two little nicks but they were negligible. I have to admit, I did miss a couple of places and my face was not 100% baby butt smooth but it was still really enjoyable. The proraso soap felt all tingly and chit on my skin no homo
I have an Osma Alum block coming in the mail, I want to get a blade sampler pack to figure out which ones are best for me. Then maybe buy a new after-shave.Last edited by seembrah; 11-11-2014 at 11:13 PM.

Ok brahs, I'm about to take the plunge and never look back.
I'd like to hear from a few brahs or at least someone tell me what the general consensus is for the best products. I'd rather spend a little extra up front than find out once I get more into it that what I originally bought was sh!t.
What is the best:
Preshave oil
Shaving Cream
Brush
DE razor
After shave
I don't want the cheap stuff. I want the very nice stuff.
Thank you!

Everyone will have different opinions on what the "best" is, but I'll give you some products that get a lot of love from the majority of people.
Preshave oil- not needed IMO, just wash your face with a good bar soap.
Shave cream- Proraso red or green, don't think you can go wrong with any of them.
Brush- I'd go with the Omega Pro 49. Really good boar hair brush.
DE Razor- Edwin Jagger DE89 or Merkur 34c. If you want to go vintage pick up a nice Slim or Fatboy.
After shave- I don't think you can go wrong with Clubman although there is a bunch of after shaves out there!
blades Personally I don't think you can go wrong with Astras. Feathers are great as well but maybe not when your first starting.
Like I said, everyone has different opinions on what's "best", but that's just my opinion."You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action!"

Just got the Plisson for 30 bucks, which is a crazy good price for it. One of the highest rated brushes out there.
