Curious about lat pulldown and calf machines

I am starting to think about getting these. They might just be a craigslist find eventually.

    What should I look for?

The only thing I think of immediately is that the padding on the calf machine should be large and flat. Not just a round cushion on a bar.

Also, a smooth mechanism on the lat pulldown machine is a necessity along with the curl bar section.

Any makes/models that don't break the bank that are well liked? I'm thinking of spending $500 on both. With that budget, do I just keep an eye on Craigslist?

As an aside, space in my basement is at a premium. So if there is a good machine out there that does toe raises, lat pull downs, curl attachment, abs, and more other things that are useful, please let me know

    No love for these things?

Did get some info from reading though. For calf raise machines, just find one on craigslist and pay no more than $75.

    Bump for anyone to help?!?!?!

Selectorized lat pulldowns general are better than plate loaded and usually smoother too. I've got the Body Solid GLM83 and it's OK. It's not as smooth as the ones at a commercial gym.

Some do not like the lat pulldown. The thinking is that you should be doing pull-ups. I use mine for tricep work and for the low row feature. If you get a pulldown, I suggest you go with one that has a low or medium row feature.

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?
