What kind of shoes are best to lift in?

Just wondering what the best kind of shoes are to lift weights in. I lift moderate weights, and am currently wearing running shoes when I lift. I am thinking of getting new shoes, to deal with injuries and preserving my running shoes for running. I have noticed a lot of girls wearing Converse shoes to lift. What do I need to consider?

    Thanks!

I like Reebok Zigs. They offer good shock absorption for plyo moves and make me feel sort of "springy" but not unstable when doing lunges or squats. They seem to be popular at my gym too, but I think whatever shoe feels comfortable to you and offers good support will work.

I use minimalist running shoes. Ever since vibrams took off, there are lots of options for shoes that are flat without any cushioning or much of a heel. Many are much like vibrams but without the funny toes.

I personally wear inov-8 bare XFs but you could also consider merrell pace gloves, or new balance minimus.

I use Adidas Ironwork IIIs for my most of my lifts, the raised wooden heel really helps

vibram five fingers for cardio and deadlifts.
sometimes my nike frees for tire flips and farmers walks

I'm about to make the switch to either wrestling shoes or high top Chucks from my Mizuno Wave Inspires. I'm trying to really work on my squats and deads, and now that I'm upping my weights I see what people mean about the instability of squatting on foam. I just need to see which will work for both lifts- I really don't want running, squatting, deadlifting, and basketball shoes to be taking up my ENTIRE gym bag haha.

Was using Risto olympic shoes, I'm switching over to five fingers, and loving it!

Running shoes give you to much abrobtion when lifting, and you lose power. You need a solid surface. Chucks don't have much cushion. Thats why you see people lift in them

I think the vibram five finger shoes are AWESOME! I love them, especially when doing squats and deadlifts. You feel more balanced. I discovered running shoes weren't the best option for lifts where you need a flatter surface. I have even just taken my shoes off and worn socks lol but I don't really recommend getting your socks all dirty And stanky

I use Rouge Do-Wins for squatting, and Chucks for the other lifts. I use the five finger shoes for running. I don't own any tennis/running shoes.

I actually just kick my sneakers off and squat and deadlift in my socks. The floor isn't disgusting at my new gym. If I happen to do legs at my old gym, I might have to reconsider doing that LOL I wear running shoes but I NEVER run so it's sort of a waste. I should probably invest in some other kind of sneakers

I use chucks to squat and deadlift. I was just kicking my shoes off, but I ruined a few pairs of socks, because unfortunately, my gym is very dirty. On days when I don't squat and deadlift I just wear my Nike Frees.

I've recently switched to New Balance Minimus. They have a Vibram sole but on a regular looking shoe. They are very flat with next to no heel-to-toe drop. I find they give me really good connection with the ground.

I wear the Merrell Pace Gloves which are very similar to ^^, also with a Vibram sole. I use them for both running (treadmill only as they are a trail shoe and not designed for pavement) and lifting. I really want a pair of Oly lifting shoes for squating though as I have flexibility issues and the raised heel helps me get deeper. Right now I squat with plates under my heels since the Merrells have 0 heel lift.

Ohh, thats a great idea! I have really inflexible ankles too, and that would really help my range of motion. Thanks for the tip

Unless you want to drop a bunch of money on actual lifting shoes i would just get some cheap wrestling shoes.

Bare feet for me, though I have a home gym so I'm not likely to catch anything nasty from a dirty floor .

Those Vibram things look pretty sweet, are they hard wearing? Like for using outside?

I lift in these New Balance "lifestyle" shoes or whatever they call em, lol.

I can usually get pairs for $40 and they're really flat.

Cheap tennis-shoe like things that I found at Target right now. Saving up for a pair of the Vibram Five Fingers.

I think it really depends on your foot type. I have a high arch and I've always had 'clicking' in my knees and needed that extra support that absorbs shock. I also play indoor vball 4 days a week. To absorb pounding.. ASICS hands down. For that extra support I also trade out the insoles and put in arch inserts. Feels AMAZING. No shin pain or anything.
