Just wondering what the best kind of shoes are to lift weights in. I lift moderate weights, and am currently wearing running shoes when I lift. I am thinking of getting new shoes, to deal with injuries and preserving my running shoes for running. I have noticed a lot of girls wearing Converse shoes to lift. What do I need to consider?
Thanks!

I use minimalist running shoes. Ever since vibrams took off, there are lots of options for shoes that are flat without any cushioning or much of a heel. Many are much like vibrams but without the funny toes.
I personally wear inov-8 bare XFs but you could also consider merrell pace gloves, or new balance minimus.Last edited by bethanyboo; 04-24-2012 at 07:03 PM.

I'm about to make the switch to either wrestling shoes or high top Chucks from my Mizuno Wave Inspires. I'm trying to really work on my squats and deads, and now that I'm upping my weights I see what people mean about the instability of squatting on foam. I just need to see which will work for both lifts- I really don't want running, squatting, deadlifting, and basketball shoes to be taking up my ENTIRE gym bag haha.

I think the vibram five finger shoes are AWESOME! I love them, especially when doing squats and deadlifts. You feel more balanced. I discovered running shoes weren't the best option for lifts where you need a flatter surface. I have even just taken my shoes off and worn socks lol but I don't really recommend getting your socks all dirty And stanky

I use Rouge Do-Wins for squatting, and Chucks for the other lifts. I use the five finger shoes for running. I don't own any tennis/running shoes.

I actually just kick my sneakers off and squat and deadlift in my socks. The floor isn't disgusting at my new gym. If I happen to do legs at my old gym, I might have to reconsider doing that LOL I wear running shoes but I NEVER run so it's sort of a waste. I should probably invest in some other kind of sneakers

I wear the Merrell Pace Gloves which are very similar to ^^, also with a Vibram sole. I use them for both running (treadmill only as they are a trail shoe and not designed for pavement) and lifting. I really want a pair of Oly lifting shoes for squating though as I have flexibility issues and the raised heel helps me get deeper. Right now I squat with plates under my heels since the Merrells have 0 heel lift.

Cheap tennis-shoe like things that I found at Target right now. Saving up for a pair of the Vibram Five Fingers.

I think it really depends on your foot type. I have a high arch and I've always had 'clicking' in my knees and needed that extra support that absorbs shock. I also play indoor vball 4 days a week. To absorb pounding.. ASICS hands down. For that extra support I also trade out the insoles and put in arch inserts. Feels AMAZING. No shin pain or anything.
